choosing Daycare questions...

Do you have to make an appointment to check out a daycare center or can you just drop by?
How far in advance did you start looking and choose your daycare center?
Does anyone have a good list of questions to ask??

I would call first before dropping by. That way they can give you their undivided attention. Then once you really like a place, I would drop it at any given time.

Re: choosing Daycare questions...

I didn't want to call first b/c I wanted to see them in action.
Go soon!
I went in October (when I was at my halfway point) and I am STILL on a waitlist for the place I want for September! I was waitlisted at almost every place I visited.

I don't think I am going to need to start him in daycare until December or January. Do you think I should start looking now?

I would - like I said, I've been on waitlists since October 07 for September 08 (not startng the baby until he/she is 5-6 months). Now I'm starting to get stressed that I won't get the place I want b/c there is still not a spot for me. I really don't want to be stalking this place after the baby comes and I'm due in 6wks.
Last time I checked on it (last wk) they said they may be able to get me in October, which we'll take, but we will be stuck trying to figure alternative daycare for a few weeks which won't be easy.

If I were you, I'd start now while you have the time and energy. You can always hold the spot for the baby and change your mind later if necessary.

I had to make an appointment to look at the daycare I wanted. I signed her up in Aug 07 even though we aren't going to start using them until Sept 08 and we got the last spot. I'd start looking now!

Re: choosing Daycare questions...

Personally I would call in advance, get your questions answered. For example we are doing part time care for our 12 week old (when he turns 12 weeks that is) and not all centers will do 3 days a week for infants, some will only do full time.

When calling them ask when is a good tiem to visit, as in between what hours. I want a day care that says stop by pretty much any time, this way I know that if I pop by its not that they are on the best behavior because they expected me, but this is how they normally run.

Re: choosing Daycare questions...

Im not sure about waiting lists or any of that but i would def. ask them if everyone is certified , make sure they do backround checks for everyone ,and proceedures for picking your child up if you ever need someone else to pick up your child what do you need to do ( to make sure no one else can stroll in and take your child) HTH good luck!!Chat Icon

Absolutely! The place I want to use is 1 mile from work and I heard great things about it. I went in October or November 2007 and they told me the earliest I could get my son in would be December 2008! We signed him up. we haad to leave a deposit but will only lose $100 if we dont' end up using them. To us, it was worth it to hold his place.

Don't wait - some places have long waiting lists.

ETA: When I asked about visiting, they gave me two windows of time that I could just drop in and someone would show me around, I didn't need an appointment. I think the times they didn't want me to come were around drop off and feeding times.
