Chinese Banquet
I was invited to a coworkers son's wedding, which is a Chinese Banquet. Has anyone gone to one of these? I know it's a sit down dinner, no band/dj. I have never met the son before and besides being a coworker, I'm not close to him. It's at a resteraunt in Queens. 1) How much would you give? 2) What would you wear?

Re: Chinese Banquet
A Chinese wedding banquet is usually about 10-12 courses at your table. I know that the cost per person in Chinese restaurants is usually less than in non-Chinese restaurants.
My mom likes to wear dress suits to these. A formal dress would be good. For men, I suggest a suit. (There won't be dancing or anything.)
I can give my Mom a call to find out how much is good to give.

So basically it is still a dressy event? Let me know what your Mom says. TIA

Re: Chinese Banquet
I had my rehearsal dinner at a Chinese banquet in Queens. I wouldn't dress up TOO much. Maybe a nice dress but not FORMAL dress. Depending on the kind of food they chose for the banquet, the cost per person can start at $35 and go up to $100 per person. Especially if it is for a Chinese wedding because they serve a lot of fish dishes and shark fin soup, which is VERY expensive. FM me if you have questions!

Re: Chinese Banquet
Hi. My mom says a good amount to give is $100 per person. But if you are close friends, you could give more.
For a formal dress, I was meaning not a gown or black tie. I meant a dress that you might wear to an office, something respectful rather than slinkyish. KWIM?

Re: Chinese Banquet
I'm Chinese, so here's the scoop. The bride and groom pay per table. Each table seats 10-12 as the previous poster stated and usually costs between $400-$700 per table depending on the menu.
Dress is NOT formal, especially if you are not very close to the bride and groom. men can wear a suit or a jacket and tie, women typically wear a nice dress like you would maybe go out to a nice dinner in. I agree that $100 pp would be a generous gift. If it is a coworker you are not especially close to I even think $75 pp would be good.
HTH!!!

I was thinking to give $75 because besides work, I'm not social with this person. And the fact I've never met the bride and groom... My coworker did tell me he changed the menu a lot because there will be a lot of Americans there since the bride is Italian. He knows that a lot of people don't like fish (like me and DH) and changed the menu accordingly. My other coworkers don't know what to give either. So $75 is acceptable?

Re: Chinese Banquet
I personally think you are okay with $75 pp if you do not know the bride and groom personally. Standards for Chinese weddings are a little different than for American. You should be fine.

Re: Chinese Banquet
Being asian and having attended counltess chinese banquets, I would say 75-100 pp is a good amount depeng how close you are to the person.
Nowadays the cost for banquets have gone up and most couples are spending at least $700 per table (of ten) w/o tips or taxes.
So anything less than the 75pp is not adequate and will not cover the cost per person.
