Re: Chincoteague!
We've gone there the past 2 years for pony penning.
After reading a ton of reviews we chose the Best Western. It's the closest hotel to the beach. I'm totally a hotel snob and was leary about staying at a Best Western, but this one is very nice. It's immaculate, the staff is wonderful, and they have a complimentary breakfast every morning -- plus they had suites which is what we needed because there are 6 of us. There's also a Hampton Inn on the bay side -- we were thinking of maybe staying there next just to change it up because it's right in town.
As far as food goes there aren't really any "fantastic" restaurants. We like Woody's Beach BBQ -- cute place but you have to eat outside and the mosquitos can make it not so fun. Bill's Seafood is supposed to be good but we haven't eaten there because my kids and I don't really do the seafood thing. Island Creamery is awesome for ice cream.
You definitely have to do a pontoon boat sunset ride. It's beautiful there and it will also give you a good view of the ponies on the beach. We were extremely happy with Daisey's Dockside.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Re: Chincoteague!
Wee camped on Assateague. woke up to ponies outside our tent. But honestly, if you aren't into camping and don't mind assateague rather than chincoteague, ocean city Maryland is about 10 minutes away.

What is the benefit of staying at Assateague vs Chincoteague? Can you just bike around and see ponies anywhere?

We just liked that ocean city was so close so that we could also enjoy time there.
