How often does a chimney have to be cleaned?

I've been getting calls from a chimney company offering $50 for a cleaning and inspection. This seems ridiculously low to me and I'm wondering if it is a scam.

Any one have a company they would recommend?

I'd rather contact a company that is referred to me rather than hire a company that called me.
