My husband works a rotating schedule of 4 days on 2 days off, consisting of 2 nights (4-1) and 2 days (8-4). I had the luxury of having my dad watch my two kids, but we are having a few differences. I need someone 1-2 days per week. Kids are registered for school M-W-F 9-11:30. I tried sitter city and very few people are looking for something that is not consistent. We are also considering daycare and the school affiliated with where they go now does full day and extended days and willing to work with our schedule. Almost comes out to same price bc I was already sending them to schiool and a babysitter is about $200/wk. (times 36 wks bc I work in a school). WWYD? It's just hard for me bc I was so spoiled with having family so I need advice from daycare moms and/or wives of cops in similar situations. TIA!

Have you looked at an in home daycare? That's what I use and I find it to be a little flexible.

I would send them to the daycare that is affiliated with the school they go to now since they are willing to work with their schedule.

Not a wife of a cop but, wife of a fireman and found that it was easier to get a larger chain daycare to work with our crazy schedule when our kids went part time.

This is my situation, with the rotating days off. I found a SAHM to watch DS for a few hours on mornings where my DH is working. She is great and works with our schedule. Maybe you can find someone like this. In the afternoon my dad is home and watches DS while my DH sleeps. It works for us so far, thankfully.

Wife of a fireman - we use a Nanny (who is also a SAHM) and she is super flexible with our schedule no matter how much or how little the time is. I found her on Care.com and couldn't be happier.

All I can say is that DS is 4 months and has been in day care 5 days a week. I am happy with the decision and I think it will be great for him now and in years to come.

I say go for it... I can't even imagine dealing with family, and it is less stress for us knowing we don't have to worry about a babysitting needing off, calling in sick, etc. We know the days they are closed well in advance and all other days we bring him!

I think if you can afford it, daycare is your best option b/c it will give you the stability to make things less stressful for you

I am a wife of a cop and we are currently looking into in home daycares for the fall. We previously had family doing it and now have someone coming to our home just for the summer.

My DHs schedule rotates too. We used a sitter first but I didn't really have backup if she cancelled. I wound up going with a licensed home daycare. She is super flexible with hours 6am-6pm. I used to work to 7:30 and she would even stay open late for me.

My husband works the same schedule but he isnt a cop. It was very hard finding someone to work with our schedule. I searched care.com and I was unlucky there but looked locally on CL and met with a few in home providers and I found one who I love and DD loves her too. Fortunately for us she works with our schedule. Come to think of it most of the in home day cares that I met with were willing to. Good luck!

Wife of a cop with a rotating schedule here too. We have DD in daycare three days a week. My DH, sister or mom take care of the other days depending on the week. There are days that we have daycare and don't need it some weeks, but that's just the way it is with a rotating schedule. I wanted her in a center rather than in an in-home and I didn't want a nanny who would come to the house, so even though the center isn't flexible with scheduling, I still think it's our best option.

On licensed In home daycare is typically flexible. I recommend someone who only works for teachers so does not charge breaks or summer FM if you want the number. I used her and still love her.
