Changing family traditions?

This will be my 2nd married thanksgiving. We live in an apartment big enough to host. So we decided to try our hands at having my parents, sister & SO, ILs, SIL & FH over for dinner.

The tradition has always been for DH's family to go to his aunt's house for dinner...and it seems as though I've probably made a few enemies because of it...

Anyone have any words of advice?? Chat Icon

I would just ignore any comments. His aunt should realize that you have started your own family and will start your own traditions.

Re: Changing family traditions?

We went to my sister's IL's one year for christmas eve.

My MIL wasn't happy as she "always hosts christmas eve." But we went anyway. It was a nice night and a nice change.

I see nothing wrong with mixing it up a little. Expect some backlash, but in the end I'm sure it will turn out fine.

Re: Changing family traditions?

similar things happened to DW and I when we first started dating... WE didnt take over any holidays.... but started dividing them up between the two families...

Her family would come to her parents house for XMas eve then her parents would go to their house for XMas day... so instead of seeing the same ppl 2 days in a row, we now do xmas eve with DWs family and xmas day with my family.... they weren't too happy in the beginning but got over it.

We still dont have a big enough space to host a holiday yet...
