Changing diaper in the middle of the night

My DS is four and a half months old and he is sleeping through the night. The past couple of nights he has cried for maybe a minute and then puts himself back to sleep (this is around 4 am). But now when he wakes up he has a poopy diaper. I think he is crying because he pooped. Should I change him or let him sleep more since he goes right back to sleep. He wakes up and gets changed at 6 am. I don't want him to sleep in poop but I also don't want to wake him. What do you ladies usually do? Any advice would be great!

I have a 3 month old and I change him when he wakes up. He doesn't poop in the night so I am not too sure what I would do in that case. The one thing I can say is that when I change DS while he is sleeping he won't wake up, so that might be the case with your LO as well. I just wouldn't want him to get a diaper rash.

this has happened w my DS. i agree w the PP, when i change him in the middle of the night he doesn't wake up, just goes back to sleep.

he also sometimes cries for his binky. if your LO uses one, that might be the answer if he's not wet or poopy.

Can you go in and smell if he pooped? If he did, definitely change him. DD was waking up with poopy diapers for a little while, but I didn't know until she woke up in the morning (dirty diapers never seem to phase her). She got a horrible rash and I ended up having to go in and check her every 2 hours throughout the night so I could change her if she did poop.

I would definitely change poopy diapers so they don't get a rash. Whenever I have to do a middle of the night diaper change, I go in as quietly as I can, leave all the lights off, and slowly and carefully put him on the changing table. I try to leave as much clothing on as I can. He sleeps in a sleep and play and a sleep sack or Woombie. So I unzip the sleep sack from the bottom, but only as high as I need it to go. Then I do the same with the PJ's. I try not to talk or interact much with him. Usually he stays asleep or will go right back to sleep once I put him down again.

DD used to poop in the middle of the night, but I always changed her. She would fuss because she pooped, but she didn't wake up during the changing and if she did she went right back to sleep.

I would definitely change the diaper though. Leaving it on may lead to a diaper rash. Try to keep all the lights off and take off as little clothes as possible when doing it.

I remember AJ doing that. Pee or poop she'd wake up just a little bit. Not really awake but disturbed. I always changed her. I had a very strong belief in dry diapers means no diaper rash and encourages potty training.

I can't confirm the second other than to say she was dry overnight LOOOOONG before we tried potty training. And has only ever had 2 over night accidents per se. Both she was too young to understand to get up and go to the bathroom. One she made it to her door and peed while trying to open it up. The other she peed in her bed and cried.

I can confirm we never had diaper rash.

I was religious about changing her diaper. I made it through those first nearly 3yrs. Sure I probably spent more on diapers than the average mom, but I found generic that worked for her and stuck with it.

I changed her with only one pee. If I knew she was dirty, she was changed. Period.

Another added benefit. Since I did it from a young age and throughout. She got to the point where she did not wake up when I changed her. Well either she got used to it or I became a pro! LOL
