Central Air Cost
Does this seem reasonable?
$11,200
1 unit, Rheem/Ruud 13 Seer
That's for the unit and install........we don't have any existing ducts.
I have no idea if this is a good price, crazy price or about right.

Hmmm, not sure how large your house is but that sounds a bit high since it's only 13 SEERS.
The higher the SEER number the more energy efficient the unit; I actually think 13 SEERS is pretty low.
Our house is 1 colonial, about 1400sqft and we needed all of the duct work (we had no existing ducts) and we have a 2-stage, 3 ton, 18SEER unit and after the rebate we paid around 10,000. Even our highest quote was only about 12K and we had quotes that were also much lower.
I'd keep shopping around and definitely get a more energy efficient unit, especially if you plan to stay if your home for a few years. Not only will you quickly make up the difference in price in a few years, you'll keep on saving afterwards.

Thank you for the advice! We are getting a dormer done starting on Monday and everyone is telling us now is the time to do it. The $11,200 was the contractors price, we will definitely shop around. Were you having work done already when it was installed?

I paid 8k or 9k for one unit and we had no duct work beforehand. Not sure what type of unit but my house is always freezing so it works very well! I have a 2 story house with a basement and we have vents in every room except the basement because we didnt need it down there.

Get more quotes. That's the only way you'll know. I just had it done a few days ago but I had an existing system. I used central air systems in Medford and I highly recommend them. The workers did such a thorough job and the owner is the one who comes by to assess the job and quote you.

No, we weren't having any work done. We had only lived in our house about 10 months when we had it done. Also, we did it in April/May before it got really hot. I think they sometimes increase their rates in the middle of the summer bc they know people really want the CAC at that point. If you can, maybe I'd wait until after peak season but since you are dormering now, i guess that may not be possible.
