Centereach?
I'm from Mineola, so a lot of the places in Suffolk are unknown to me - what do you all think about Centereach?

First of all Palebride, love your avatar
I am moving to northern Centereach soon. Some areas are better than others. There is a lot of talk about the area picking up because a lot of young couples are moving there and fixing up the houses. I really like the area that we are moving too. It's a family oriented neighborhood.

Some decent areas. Some ok areas. Some crappy areas.
Vanessa said the school district isn't the greatest compared to others that neighbor it. The prices of the houses are priced accordingly to that.
But she also said she wouldn't call it a "bad" district and would probably live there if we found a house.
Me personally I don't have a problem with the area and would live there.

That's what I saw also when we drove around! But, I guess that's true for pretty much any town....well, any town that we can afford to live in
I wasn't sure about the schools though. Not that I have to worry about that right now....but who knows what the future holds?
Maybe I'll FM Julz too and see what she thinks.....
And thanks for the compliments on my new avatar! I think he's sooooo cute!

Re: Centereach?
I moved to Centereach in January, like previously stated above - it has it good and bad areas. School district is ok - not the greatest, but not the worst. I like it here. There is so much in the area - mall is 10 minutes away - if even that far. Restaurants everywhere - supermarkets everywhere.

Re: Centereach?
YAY we can be neighbors!!! Like the above posters said, schools are not the greatest. I have been reading the reports and it seems it the high school that is the problem.. elementary is not bad. I figure we are not going to be using the high school for 15+ years and we are also not worried about reselling at the rate houses are selling here. ALso, like they said above, a lot of young couples are moving into the area I guess because of the decent prices, but as a result you will see many of the houses improving! From what I have seen so far (been here since Nov) things are always getting better around here. you always hear a saw going on the weekend or see some kind of home improvements being done. We just had a party at our house and 3 of our neighbors were last to leave. The neighborhood is really friendly, people so outgoing. They are always willing to lend a hand (like one neighbor pulled our stumps out with his truck, another helped Ray install our door today). There are so many kids riding bikes and playing on the streets in our neighborhood and I like seeing that, so someday when we have kids they will have a safe place to play At first I was a little unsure about the neighborhood since it was a step down from where I grew up, butI am starting to REALLY like it here. Mostly because our neighbors are so great! and because I am only 4 miles frommy job LOL! When I was looking, I saw some "crappy" areas which would be near the main roads for the most part. I prefer the area North of Middle Country Road. Other than that I wouldn't say there are crappy areas, more like decent areas with a few crappy houses mixed in. Seriously, you will see like 3 really nice houses in a row, an average house, and then a DUMP or two. (This is going by appearance of the houses.) But what I have been seeing is the DUMPS are the ones selling cheap and then getting fixed up.. for example our house and another one on our block were so crappy and now are being fixed up nice. I think there is only 1 crappy one left on our block. This is what I mean about seeing the area improve. Really drastic improvements. FM me if you have any more questions.

Re: Centereach?
I agree with everything julz has said! We moved here 3 years ago and have seen major changes with home renovations! Like Julz said- you always hear a saw and see the renovations! The area is definately up and coming. Our neighborhood is very family oriented and quiet. Everyone is so helpful. North of Middle Country Rd. is def. the better part of centereach. We live on the border of South Setauket and Centereach. Love it here! At first this was going to be a starter house for us (since it is a "step down" from where I grew up) but now I can't think of leaving! More crime happened in my old neighborhood (nesconset) than it does on my block in centereach. The SD is right in the middle. I have been carefully looking at it for the past 3 years (I'm a teacher and obsessed w/good districts) and I really have to say that it's not far off from where I teach (smithtown) in terms of the 4th grad ELA scores! There is also a very nice student/teacher ratio. I have heard that the better HS to have your kids go to is Newfield, not Centereach. I know some teachers who's kids teach in Middle Country SD and they tell me that the SD has a bad rep but is actually a good district. The problem is that years ago it wasn't very good. Now new families are moving here and the town, SD and everything else has gotten so much better than what it was in the past.
I would def. recommend it here. I have never met someone who lives here that wouldn't tell you the same.

Re: Centereach?
I don't live in Centereach but my best friend does and there are some really nice large lots there - it can feel actually "country-ish" when you get away from Jericho Tpk. When I'm at her house it feels kind of like upstate - pretty trees and birds and quiet.

Re: Centereach?
DH and I grew up in Centereach. We both lived in large houses with big property with wooded lots behind. I like Centereach because alot of the neighborhoods are like that where houses are not on top of one another. It's true that The "crappy" areas are turning around due to younger couples moving in. As far as the schools go, we both went through, went to Dawnwood M.S. and Centereach H.S. and came out just fine. Newfield H.S. is worse than Centereach though with a higher absenteeism and drop-out rate.
Good luck with your search!!

Re: Centereach?
I have family there - its gotten really nice over the last few years (not that it was bad or anything) but a lot of younger home buyers are going there bc you can still get a lot for your $. There was a big article in Newsday about it. My Mom was raised there and my family has lived there since the 40's, I would live there too if we didnt have a hosue already!

You were actually the one that turned me onto the town I'd never even heard of it before you mentioned it - and after a little investigating on MLSLI....I found it very reasonable!

Re: Centereach?
as with any town, there are decent areas, and not so decent areas. I grew up in STony Brook, which neighbors it depending on which way you go. I used to cut up Mark Tree Rd all the time to go to the stores up there.
From what I hear the HS is rough....but as Julz says...it's improving. I haven't been through there in over a year, but if the other young couples are anything like Julie & ray....you're gonna have a great investment!

Ahhh...the rumors, It all goes back to the rivalry between CHS and NHS. A friend is a guidance counselor at NHS so that's where my info came from. We just put a bid in on a house where our kids would go to NHS. Anything can happen with schools in 10 years!

Ah ha! That's funny! It really is a nice place...close to Port Jeff and Stonybrook, close to the LIE...very nice. Did I tell you about the house that is for sale over in my Aunt's area? Its her exact house (a Ranch with a big 2 car garage under it, 3 BR, EIK, DR, LR, 2 full baths, finished basement and big yard) for $326!! Ive tried to convince DH to sell out house but he wont leave Northport. So I give up! But I think you get more for your $ in Centereach, that's for sure!

Its the same house as my AUnt's - only my Aunt's is more updated and has a sliding door from the DR out to a deck. Its really nice. They raised 2 kids in that house and there was plenty of room. The basement was made in to a family room/rec room with a bar...it was a nice house. They still live there. Oh and did you notice the HUGE driveway? Its like a 8 car driveway!!
