casual place for yummy dinner in manhatten? need rec please
dh and i have tickets to see mamma mia the 1st friday night in december. we'd like to go out to dinner too... but we aren't into too fancy places or exotic foods. we're casual and like comfort foods or your standard american, burgers, italian etc.
dh is BIIIG into dessert and will be disappointed without a delectable dessert menu involving chocolate.
i was going to take him to serendipity, but i am going to the city for another play with my mom, sister and neice 2 days later and that's where we are going to dinner.
any recs for me?

Go to Ellen's Stardust Diner. It's basically all comfort foods, burgers, etc. HUGE dessert menu and lots of ice creams, sodas, shakes, pies, death by chocolate etc…. I believe it's on 51st, so not far from Mamma Mia.

Fat annies truck stop has comfort food (even tater tots) I don't know how the dessert is. It's near Penn.

They closed. It's a place called Feile now and is run by the same people as Stout next door. They have an every so slightly fancier menu then Stout and it's much smaller.

I was also going to suggest Cafe Un Deaux Trois which is across the street from Virgil's. Although I consider it comfort food, it is not along the lines of a burger type place, LOL!

While its not in the theatre district, I would recommend Max Brenner's if DH is really into chocolate. It's on Broadway between 13th and 14th so its easy to get to the theatre by cab or subway.
ETA: The regular food menu has burgers, sandwiches, etc.
