carseat question

DD is 4 and weighs roughly 40lbs. I need a new carseat in my moms car for her. The cosco one I have only goes to 40lbs.

Can she go in a high back booster or do I need a regular 5 point harness?

Can you please recommend something on the cheaper side since it wont be used regularly.

TIA

4 year old should definitely be harnessed. Most kids aren't developmentally ready for a booster until at least 6 years old.

As for a recommendation, it can depend on your car, how many are in the backseat, etc. but the Harmony Defender (around $95) is a recommended one.

Re: carseat question

My daughter is 4, 40 lbs and about 41" tall. She is in a high back booster. The car seat minimum requirements were 38" tall and 30 lbs. That I bought. It was from Walmart, around $40. Had good reviews.
Many of her other 4 year old friends are in backless boosters, I do not think she is ready for that yet but she seems to fit well in the high back, it has the belt positioned so the belt hits the correct place on her chest.

Just as an FYI- just because those are the minimums of the seat, doesn't make it safe. Check out the links I posted above about harness vs. booster. It's really much safer for your daughter to be harnessed. Chat Icon

Re: carseat question

I would go for a seat that harnesses up to at least 65 pounds. MUCH safer... There are some seats that harness even higher.. Then they turn into regular boosters for later.... We have a Graco Nautilus. I am looking to get a Britax that harnesses up to 90lbs.

Unfortunately the minimums on booster seats are grossly misleading. As are the maximum limits on some car seats. People think that 4 is the "magic number" for a booster because that's what the law states. The car seat laws for NY were written 30 years ago when car seats had MUCH lower limits then they do now. Most kids will not get an appropriate and safe belt fit until they are close to 6 on average. They also need to be able to sit correctly while awake AND sleeping. The link above about when to switch explains it wonderfully.

DS is 4 and he is in a Britax Frontier. its a harnessed seat that can convert to a high back booster ( where the car's seat belt feeds through it to position the seat belt correctly on him)
he still uses the harness, and will for awhile- it really is the safest for them to be harnessed as long as possible.

since you need for for a "spare" seat, check out the Evenflo Maestro. We have one as a spare- its the same as our Britax (where you can use a harness or the car seat belt), but it was cheaper... got it for about $70 or so at Target Chat Icon

I agree, to harness as long as possible. But I can tell you, my DD is 8, and weighs about 65lbs. There is NO WAY she'd still be in a 5 point harness til 90lbs. She doesn't even like having to use the hi-back booster that she is currently in. I only switched her to that about a year ago. But she was crying all the time when she was in the full harnessed seat at 6-7 that she was like a baby; that none of her friends were in carseats any more. No way could I have her in one now.

I think it is great if you can get your DC to be in one that long, but I think my DD would refuse to go in the car! Chat Icon
