Car seats and 1 year old
DD will be a year old next month. What kind of car seat do I get? Does it go by age and weight?

And she should remain rear facing until at least two years old if not longer. How big is she? I'm assuming she's still in her infant carrier? ?

You need a convertible that rf until at least 2 and than ff after that. Find carseatforthelittles on Facebook and the techs there can help you pick out a good seat in your budget.

Re: Car seats and 1 year old
Age has nothing to do with car seats. It is only weight and height. My twins were in their infant seat until they were 18m. We then moved them to their convertible seat rear facing. They will stay rear facing until they meet the weight or height.

it varies by seat. if she still fits the weight requirements (AND height) in her infant seat, i'd just keep her in that. saves money imo

It's all three. More and more manufacturers are adding min AGE along with height/weight requirements for their seats, especially for boosters.
Age matters.
Height matters.
Weight matters. (and it is clothed weight)
RF to a minimum of age 2. Convertible or infant seat, doesn't matter so long as the child still fits by height and weight.
Over 2 AND over stated minimums for height and weight for the convertible or combination seat chosen for FF.
Recommended to remain harnessed until seat is outgrown before moving to a belt positioning booster seat. Preferably aged 5-7, but at least aged 4 and must meet minimums on height/weight of chosen booster and have maturity to maintain position in seat.
The minimums and maximums are on the warning labels on all seats as well as in your manual (and can be found on manufacturer website as well)

I believe Convertible seats can be used in lieu of an infant seat but most people use an infant seat first b/c of the ease of getting it in and out of the car.

Re: Car seats and 1 year old
I believe the graco snug ride 30 goes to 30 lb/30 in. My girls are 20 lb or less still but are about 30 inches now at 14.5 mo. I just ordered convertible seats for them. I feel like they need bigger. It's tough to get them in the bucket shape of the infant shape especially since they fight me.

I am sorry but your information is wrong. All development and progression for car seats is by age not weight and height. Development of the muscular system and a child is by age.
The seats you choose are what governs the proper use of that seat. That is why choosing a proper seat is important.

Tara,
You and I normally agree, however when we talk about the recommendations for rear facing we are not talking about a specific car seat, but rather that children should be rear facing up to two. Now today's seats can go to higher weight when rear facing so getting to two is easy. However we do not use height and weight other than in deciding if the seat we are using is appropriate.
So you are correct in your overall statements with regards to dealing with manufactures recommendations. As always - good job!

Re: Car seats and 1 year old
Bad information has been given out on this posting and if you are not a certified tech you should not be giving information.
When we talk about car seats the major recommendations are based on age. Height and weight is considered with regard to the use of a specific seat. Manufactures of car seats are great in listing the proper use for their seat with regard to children and their size.
However we recommend children remain rear facing until two and above REGARDLESS of height and weight. The muscular development of children i by age. Therefore a 18 month old that is 20 pound has the same development as a 18 month 35 pound baby.
Now, some seats are better than others with regard to a child's size. Most parents stop using infant carriers around 10 months give or take. Main reason is that the seat and the child become heavy to carry. That s why we change to a convertible seat. In choosing one, most can go up to 40 pounds rear facing which should get us to two years old. However there are still some seat that can only go to 30, these would not make good choices.
When we talk about an older child, we do not recommend boosters be used for children under 4 years old. However seat manufactures will now impose additional constrains such as starting weight.
The main point I am trying to bring here is that do not confuse the car seats height and weight guide with the recommendation for car seat use. Tara earlier was correct in her summary, but my disagreement was she combined the two topics together.
However anyone that made a statement that age was not the primary consideration is incorrect.
