Car Seat Question

So while I know that all car seats must pass the same safety test, how is it truly possible that they are all equally safe?

We have a Chicco Nextfit as our primary seat, and Cosco Sceneras for each of the grandparent's car. I hate using the Cosco, because it just seems so flimsy to me. While I get that a lot of the Chicco is padding, it also seems like a more substantial seat should something ever happen.

I guess my question is, while they all pass, would some seats receive say, a grade of 70 and some a grade of 100?

I just can't wrap my mind around the idea that the Cosco is as safe as my Nextfit.

I personally don't think they are equally safe (just due to physics and materials science), but they do all have to meet the same minimum level of safety, so they are all "safe enough."

Re: Car Seat Question

Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure it's just a Pass/Fail thing. No real "ranges." The extra cost is usually due to extra padding, weight/height limits, cup holders, ease of installation, etc.

Car Seat Question

They all meet the same safety requirements but a steel reinforced seat is going to be stronger than an all plastic seat. The requirements to pass are pass/fail there is no gradinging system. Personally, I did not like the Cosco seats (for your exact reasoning) and decided against purchasing one for travel. I ended up going with the Britax roundabout after taking to the tech who installed dd Britax marathon in my car.

I am going to quote you Chat Icon because this is exactly it.

It is pass or fail. There is no way of knowing if a particular seat passed more or less then another because they do not test to that extent.

All seats on the market pass the same federal standards. But they must be installed and used properly as well. 3 out of 4 seats have at least one misuse whether it is in installation or useage.

Companies say they do "extra" testing above the minimums. And they do. But those results are not released to the public so there is no way of knowing if they are extra by 1% or 100%

The majority of the $ spent on car seats is for the name, fabric and other bells and whistles

No I know they all pass the same test, as I stated above.

I was just saying that while I know there's no grading system I feel like all seats are not equally safe.

The numbers were just hypothetical.
