If he still fits comfortably in the 5pt harness seat he has now I would leave him.

5 point combination seat like the graco nautilus, graco Argos, harmony defender, for example.

Re: Car Seat or Booster for 5 year old question
I am wondering the same DD is 40 lbs...not sure her height. I am thinking of getting a new car soon and figured I'd get a new car seat since the one in my car is coming up on 5 years old.
I thought of a high back booster since she is 5 now but the thought of using a seat belt and not a 5 pt harness kind of bothers me
So I guess i have to get a combination seat.

My 6.5 year old is in a Britax Frontier. He's small for his age and still in the 5 pt harness. I like that it can convert to a booster as he gets bigger.

i would look into a combo seat... like the grace nautilus, or the Britax frontier. my son will be 5 in November, and we have him in the Britax frontier. he'll have the 5 pt harness ( it can go up to 90 pounds i think!), and then it turns into a high back booster that you can use with the car's seat belt when he gets a little older.

Car Seat or Booster for 5 year old question
we have the britax pionner. Love it. DD is 5 we still use the harness for her. Shes 40 lbs. and tall for her age, but I am more comfortable with the harness. it will eventually convert to high back booster with seat belt. I am just not ready and see kids all the time moved way to early and I don't like it lol. she asks all the time why her friend uses the seatbelt, but I tell her I don't think that's safe enough just yet. I see no rush

I left my DD in a 5 point harness until she was 6, then we switched her to the highback booster.
ETA - We have the Graco Nautilus 3-In-1

Exactly the same for us The seat is 5 years old and I want to get a new one. Would def prefer to keep him in a 5pt harness for as long as possible!

Car Seat or Booster for 5 year old question
My son is 5.5 and is 40 lbs and 43 inches and I still have him in a 5pt harness.
We've used a booster occasionally (to and from daycare if we're picking up other kids) and I just prefer him to be in the harness still.
