car seat inspection
Ive been calling all over the place to get my car seat inspected. Im due in just a few weeks and my dr. even thinks Ill be going early which only leaves me like 2 weeks now! I have yet to get my car seat inspected because I only got the carseat from the inlaws 2 weeks ago. You would think that every firehouse or police dept does these inspections, but NOPE! And, you have to make appointments which are weeks away. How necessary is it to get the carseat inspected? I even called chrysler/dodge/jeep and Gunther VW and no luck.

You have to go to a police station, car dealers are not authorized to perform those inspections because of insurance and liability. I cant believe that they have such a long wait! that stinks! Make an appt and in the meantime just pop in to a station and see if someone wont help you on the spot

yeah thats what i heard about the car dealers.. and yet i call the surrounding cities in my town and they dont do them! Ive only found two local police depts.. and i even called fire depts. Why would they not want to offer such an important service?!?!?!

I don't know where you live, but I called the Riverhead Police Department and got an appointment within a day or so. There was only 1 guy who did it, but he was really nice and helpful!

Definitely call a state police station. I had my DDs done in Farmingdale right on Rt. 110.

That is annoying! I know when I worked in a precinct in Queens, no one [that I knew of] was trained in the car seat inspections. Try this site, maybe it will help: Car Seat Inspection

I just checked those links and sure enough all the locations are approximately 45min to over an hour away. I live in south florida. I guess they dont find these things important here. I just called another police dept and got the same run around, "we dont do inspections anymore" and i asked if they knew of anywhere else and they said no. Great.

Not sure how true that is. When I punch in my zip code, a couple of Audi dealerships show up...

I plugged in our zip (we live in port jeff village), and discovered we also have to travel about as long as you do 
it's fine. there are times we have to go either way out east or west, and we'll plan to run those errands when we get the seat inspected....

I live in Huntington and the Audi dealer listed doesnt do it anymore. I went to the State Police Station at Republic Airport this past Saturday and they did it. They only do it once a month but they may be able to tell you where you can go over the next 2 weeks. We're glad we went being we were sure they were in right but both had to be adjusted.

since mom lives in dix hills (within 7 min from huntington audi), I would have gone there originally too...
Instead, I'll go to the brentwood police dept on crooked hill rd, and then I'll do my errands with mom and DH....

WOAH!! I have never heard of this before...obviously this is my first child, but i have 3 siblings with children and my DH's family too and i have never heard of this "car seat inspection" is it optional?? What is the purpose???

I'll enlighten you on the whole inspection thing...
car seats are a PITA...... you install them according to the manufacturers directions... or so you THINK... and then you take it to a car seat expert and they politely say it's all wrong, nothing is snug enough, and your installation would fail in a car accident 
they then remove your seat, and THEY install it the correct way.... priceless.
(and yes, you always have to go through the formality of trying to install it yourself prior to going to them... but they'll gladly redo your work...)
I highly recommend you get your family to have all of their childseats inspected ASAP.

I live in Garden City and today called the police station. The officer told me I needed to make an appt and they only do it 1x a month. Well I already missed out this month and the next one is the end of June. I'll be so close to my due date by then!! 
I'll have to call other stations to see if they have earlier appts.

I never had the seat inspected. My feeling is if you're going to do it then you have to be prepared to do it every time you take the car seat out. I am confident in DH's ability to install a car seat and I just don't view it as necessary.

When I took my Infant CPR class, they told us that 86% of infant seats are installed incorrectly. If you get in an accident, the main cause of infant injury/death in the accident is improperly installed car seats. So, they strongly encouraged us to get them inspected. Its free and took 10 minutes - so why wouldn't you? My friend in California said its mandatory there!

I recently posted this link on parenting. The town of Hempstead Department of Safety should be able to do it quickly. They rotate locations. I made an appt yesterday for tomorrow in Rockville Center. Chris in Mineola usually has quick appts too but I think he is away. There weren't any appts with him for 2 weeks. The other Nassau ones seem to have a longer wait. inspection sites
Just wanted to add that I believe it is routine that they show you how to install the seat properly, not just put it in for you so that you are able to do it yourself if you have to take it out and re-install it.

I called all over Nassau today and ONLY the SECOND Precinct does it...one would think since my DH is an officer it is not that hard. Voice mail on the 2ndP said that there are no dates scheduled to do it. I called the first P in Suffolk and I see the HWY unit on route 110 will do it.
Geez, I have to get this done ASAP!
