Car Question and Dilemma
If you owe two cars do both accommodate everyone in the family?
I'm debating about making a purchase on a second car (an all electric) but it won't sit my family of 5 comfortably (at least not until my first 2 kids are using boosters) - we do intend to have an SUV that will fit all 5 so the second car will just be for me to drive my boys around when hubby is not around.
What's everyone's take on a second car that won't fit everyone in the family? Yay or nay?

i say nay. You might need to fit everyone in it at some point and if you only have one car that can accommodate everyone, you might be stuck.

Agree. What if the bigger car breaks down or is in the shop or something? IMO you need 2 cars that can fully function and fit everyone just in case one car is out of commission or someone needs to take it for work, etc/
A small, electric, commuter car is great if you have a small family or if it's your third car.

Re: Car Question and Dilemma
Nay for me too. There have been times where one car was in the shop and they were out of loaner vehicles where having a second car that fit everyone was vital. I would only do it if it was your third car, and even then one of those green cars really needs to be driven for more than nine years for it to actually make financial sense. Do you plan on keeping it that long? I wonder when self driving vehicles will be available, and will it be within ten years?

Re: Car Question and Dilemma
We have two cars but DH's car couldn't really fit the two kids comfortably in their car/booster seats. He just uses it as a commuter car, we take my SUV everywhere.
ETA - We've managed for almost 7 yrs this way with no issues.

Re: Car Question and Dilemma
Yes - both of our cars accomodate our whole family ....... I don't see the point in having the second car be impractical like that .......

Yeah we are getting a commuter car and it doesn't need to fit both kids comfortably, most likely it will but we will use our suv for family trips

Car Question and Dilemma
I say Yay. we have 2 cars. 1 family wagon, and 1 - 2 door coupe. we can't fit everyone comfortably in that. I don't see a problem with it. going to replace the coupe with a 4 door soon, mainly for ease of getting my son in and out and that I want a slightly larger car. but it isn't going to be super comfortable for all the family to go, we have my wife's minivan for that.
you can always rent a larger car if your car is in the shop for a while. why drive something huge for the off chance your car breaks down?

Re: Car Question and Dilemma
We split the difference. We have had just our SUV for the past 3 years and were fine, but were starting to need a second car now that we have baby#2. It's primarily a station car for me 1-2x a week, plus it's the car DH would take if we split up on the weekends. We went with a larger sedan that could accommodate a rear facing carseat for our little guy, even though we always take the SUV when he is going somewhere or we go somewhere as a family. Just in case. We didn't want to buy a car that couldn't work as a backup if we needed to.

SOOO looking forward to this...
For the OP: We have 3 cars right now. The only challenge with one care that fits the family and one that doesn't is that if the person with the smaller car needs to get the kids they need to go home and switch cars.

Re: Car Question and Dilemma
Thanks all! We're going to hold off on buying that electric car for now but it's not out of the question. I really don't want to get 2 SUVs if that can be avoided.
Like some of you say, there's no reason to get a 2nd car if it's just meant to be a commuter car (or car for mainly solo driving). :) Thaniks Goldenrod for the tip on the Tesla SUV!

You can always get a hybrid vehicle. I know it's not the same as an all electric but it's better than a non-hybrid.
I love my Prius. I'd get a Prius V if it qualified for a clean pass but since it doesn't, I just have the regular one but if I had more than 2 kids (well 1 and then another on the way), it would definitely be one of my top choices.

You can see some pics of the Tesla Model X, and updates here:

Now they say delivery for new reservations is early 2016. I guess the fall reservations were taken up already.

Car Question and Dilemma
If you don't want 2 SUV's I'd go with something like a Honda Accord Hybrid. The Accord is really roomy and you can definitely get a family of 5 comfortable. I've sat with 3 adults in the back of it. You don't have to get the Hybrid of course, but I mentioned it because you were interested in electric. When I was doing car research, it was rated better than the prius and other hybrid vehicles in terms of value, gas mileage, etc.
