Car Insurace question regarding past accident
I have a question...4.5 years ago my dad had a minor accident that was his fault. He was also diagnosed w/ alzheimner's (prior to the accident) and my mom decided that after the accident she would have his license taken away. He has NOT driven in 4.5 years and no longer has a NYS license, just an NYS ID card.
My mom called an insurance company yesterday for a quote and was told b/c she's his spouse, she has to be "charged" for the accident for 5 years. So basically, my dad doesn't have a car, doesn't drive and my Mom is being charged w/ his accident from 4.5 years ago. Is that correct or is the insurance company pulling a fast one?
TIA!!!

my insurance almost doubled when i told them dhs name . Since your dad no longer has a license is making this a little confusing. Can she try calling another insurance company.

I would call around. That's just ridiculous! She was not the person who had an accident.

Did she legally have his license taken away through DMV? My parents ran into a similar problem when my Grandfather was living with them. Although he didn't drive the company wanted to list him on their insurance. I don't know if they had to get some sort of proof from DMV but I can ask if you'd like.

I don't think that is correct. He doesn't even have a license. I would get a quote from another insurance company.

Were they both named as policyholders? Mr. and MRs. SMith? Or was the policy just written in your dad's name, Mr Smith only?

Re: Car Insurace question regarding past accident
Incorrect.
1st of all, most companies dont look at an accident unless within 3yrs. also providing that he dosent have a license either, she cant be charged for it.
Was she trying to switch or just with the current company she has?
I know that sometimes an accident can follow the car not the driver and vice versa. Again each company is diff.

It's crazy and my mom is arguing w/ me!!! She called a new company for a new quote and the car that was in the accident has been sold.

Yes, license was officially taken away and a NYS ID card was issued.

Re: Car Insurace question regarding past accident
Hmmm sounds off to me. I work for an insurance company. In general, accidents are charged for 3 years, but are often considered in underwriting for 5. However, in my experience, if someone's license is taken away, they'd still be on the policy as a spouse, but shouldn't impact because they are not & cannot drive.
