I tried to charge the entire amount of my car so I could get the miles. I was told they would only take $6K on the card.

Yes, you can. But most dealers will have a cap on the amount because they have to pay fees on the charges.....

yes we lease a car and put the downpayment on CC for miles.

I have done it also- we bought a car in another state once and it was the only way to leave a desposit
and now I usually just use my debit card or amex card- it's so much easier then going to the bank

We were only allowed to put $500 down on our Toyota in 2003.  I wanted the points so bad!!! We put 13K cash down on that car!

Car companies can take it as a payement but they rather not. They get hit with fee's for charging the card.
This is why they push hard for checks, cash, etc... Some allow different limits but if you hold your ground and say you need to put x amount down for a car or i'm not buying, they will probally make the deal. They may and i've seen them ask for the 3% extra charge difference because they don't want to take a hit. They are so critical on every penny coming in...
