Can you give me advice on a simple DIY project? WITH PICS!!

I found a perfect desk chair for my computer desk (I have been using a kitchen chair) in the garbage today (I love in Park SLope, so the garbage is pretty nice Chat Icon ) Anyway, it has been pained a couple of times and the cushion definitely needs some new fabric. Here are my questions.

1- Do I have to sand the chair before painting it?

2- Does it need a primer?

3- Do I have to use a staple gun to reupholster the seat or will a regular stapler do?

Just to let you know the chair is in excellent condition structurally, just needs a good painting and some fabric for the seat cushion. Maybe even a pillow to go on top of it. Suggestions??

One more thing--it's solid wood--not sure what kind.

You need to sand before painting. I probably wouldn't prime since it's already painted white, just maybe hit the spots where the wood is showing through.

I can't imagine a regular stapler going through the fabric and the wood. I've always used a manual staple gun, they aren't expensive. Any hardware store will have them. I got mine at Walmart.

Thank you! I really should invest in one anyway. Should I sand the entire chair? That seems like a PITA.

Also, what type of sandpaper should I use?

My step mother trash picks awesome stuff all the time. She NEVER sands. She uses Killz Primer and 2 coats of paint. If you are looking for a "perfect" finish then you will want to sand, but shabby chic-ish you're cool with primer and paint.

I would lightly sand - if you go to the paint store they will tell you which sand paper to buy. Wipe it down with a damp cloth to let dry and then paint it! I wouldn't even prime it since it's already white.

And yes, I would use a staple gun for that seat. Otherwise you risk it coming undone...

I got my staple gun at Lowes. It also shoots small NAILS... DH was jealous of it. Chat Icon

You can also buy foam at a craft store & put it under the fabric to make the seat more comfy.

Thanks all! Does anyone know what that orange stuff is called that removes paint? It's like a foam that you spread on and then wipe it off and stain?
