Can we talk about breastfeeding and teeth
My DS's 1st tooth just cut a few days ago and now I am petrified he's going to take my nipple off as it comes in fully! Lately he's been "gumming" me and that hurts like hell so I can only imagine the pain once his tooth is in (and that sucker is sooooo sharp). I've told him "NO" in a firm voice when he's gummed me but he just laughs at me! I'm SCARED!!!!
Please share your experiences with me and tell me how I have nothing to worry about

Re: Can we talk about breastfeeding and teeth
it'll be okay marie!
before DD's two bottom teeth came through, she would bite me with her gums..hurt like hell!! telling her "no!" didn't work so i would either smoosh her face into my boob or take her off completely. both tactics got her really upset and it only took a few times before she got the hint. i haven't been bit for quite some time now! i it stays that way! although i did speak to a fellow mommy who's DS just got his two upper teeth. since it's direct contact w the nipple she's been bit a few times...i'm again terrified of what happens when my DD's top teeth come in! i made it thru the bottom i hope the top don't hurt me!!

Thanks I'll tyr the smooshing since the "NO" clearly didnt work! My nips are already scarred from when they were cracked and bleeding 6 months ago!! I'm just hopingto come out of this with my nipple still intact

Re: Can we talk about breastfeeding and teeth
My 9 month old dd got her first tooth at 5 months old, and now, at 9 months, she has 7 teeth. I was so worried that she would bite me and it would really hurt, but she has only lightly bit twice. Painfull, but not horrible. Everytime she would latch on, I would get nervous!

Re: Can we talk about breastfeeding and teeth
Mads didn't get teeth til almost 11 months so sge was weaned by then.
Not so lucky with Ela- she sprouted teeth much earlier than Madelyn did. With the appearance of the first 2 (at the same time) I had the same fears as you and found I was just sitting there with my pinky ready to jam into her mouth in cae I felt her clamp down.
I can't believe it, but here it is 3 months and 5 more teeth later and she hasn't bit me yet!
I understand that when an infant is actively nursing, there is no way for them to bite as the tongue is wrapped along the bottom of the nipple (covering the lower teeth). Knowing this, I always unlatch her when she starts to play around/lose interest.

Re: Can we talk about breastfeeding and teeth
It hurts! DS had several teeth before I was dong BFing and it was always a painful surprise when he would take a bite.
I did notice, however, that he would tend to bite more when he got distracted. I guess it was because he was getting older and becoming more aware of his surroundings and noises. So I made some changes and would try to only nurse him when I was in a quiet space. No more nursing around MIL who could never stop talking!!!
