Can someone tell me about CT?

A friend is moving there & said she got a great deal on a house. I have no idea about the neighborhoods there, but she was looking in Bristol & Waterbury.

TIA.

Re: Can someone tell me about CT?

I grew up in CT. It definately depends where you are looking. Waterbury is a city and not the best area. It does have some nice areas, but wouldn't be where I would look. Bristol is better. It is a bit more north and famous for being the hope of ESPN. Bristol is bordered by some nicer towns, Southington & Cheshire.

Let me know if you have specific questions or want recommendations on areas to look.

Re: Can someone tell me about CT?

Thank you for your responses. From what I have seen on the listings Waterbury has one area that is very "city" and has lots of multi-family homes very close together. Bristol seems to be a little more what I would like, and I think that is what she is going for as well.

If she likes it well enough, she may get a friend to move into the same neighbohood....DH & I are very seriously considering leaving LIChat Icon

Re: Can someone tell me about CT?

I love where I am... In Monroe, CT. it is more southern CT- between Trumbull and Danbury/Newtwon area.

It has a mix of country and suburban...it is as quiet as you want it to be but close enough to the more lively places when you want that. It has a great school system.

I can give you advice on areas that are more Southern...

Waterbury- All I know is what you know- not the greastest area-very industrial- not a place I would want to live.

I dont know much about Bristol

Re: Can someone tell me about CT?

I do agree about Waterbury.

My ex worked for ESPN in Bristol. The downtown area was not the best because it was a little run down when I was there (about 7 years ago, so maybe it has changed). Though the downtown area did have lots of services, stores, etc. So you would have everything at your fingertips.

When you get out of the downtown Bristol area, the homes and areas do have a more rural feel than downtown and than on LI. There are also plenty of woodsy areas. I knew someone who bought a cute colonial for about $225,000.

We lived in Glastonbury, near Hartford. Glastonbury is a quaint town with great education system for the kids. Was a farming area, long ago, and that has become more upscale today. Rolling hills and dairy farms to this day, which I loved. (Hebron is a town that is even more rural, but very well populated.) We built a house from scratch. 3,000 sq ft for $300,000 with a huge master bath, granite, sun room, fireplace, everything, and on land abutting a nature preserve. Land was about $60,000 acre. Though sadly, had to sell. But it sold easily because the Hartford area brings in lots of people who are relocating.

I say, take a drive and visit. I think you'll like it.

Re: Can someone tell me about CT?

I grew up in CT too (southern), but I am not very familiar with the areas. But unless they are commuting to Hartford or Danbury, I would imagine that it's going to be a very long commute anywhere else.

Re: Can someone tell me about CT?

to my understanding, southern CT is comparable (price wise) to LI. The further north you go, the cheaper it gets. DH and I looked at a tremendous house...can't remember the town but this house was TOO big. It came with 3 acres, a pool, separate artists studio (DH likes pottery), etc. ASKING 409K!!!

It's amazing what you can get in other areas..... ever watch house hunters? It can depress you.

LOL House Hunters & Hidden Potential annoy the crap out of meChat Icon

I have found that the southern part of CT is very expensive like LI. I work in publishing/new media & DH is a mechanic, so as long as there are a cluster of dealerships in a town he can find work. I can work from home if I need to. (plus if it is that much cheaper to live I may not have to work full time at all!)

My friend, who is the one moving is a college administrator. I think she said there is a UCONN Campus near or in Waterbury, so maybe that is where she is headed. I dunno I am getting the details from her this weekend.

Not sure exactly....my sister's SIL is selling her house there because they decided to move back to LI.
You'd be close to my sister, so I could visit you when I go to see her Chat Icon

There are many car dealerships in Danbury, and I like that area. We like Danbury a lot- even though we live in NY, we shop there a lot because there is very little shopping where we live.

New Milford is an adorable little town, north of Danbury. Real estate and taxes are definitely less than LI. We would have bought in Connecticut, but I commute to the Bronx, and I don't think I could have dealt with another minute in the car. Chat Icon

Canton is north of Hartford.

I've lived in several parts of CT over the past 5-6 years. DH grew up in CT. I wouldn't look in Waterbury for a house. IMO, it's not a good area. However, there are beautiful towns a few exits away (Middlebury, Southbury, Woodbury, etc.) and all are very affordable, at least by LI standards.

I don't know much about Bristol.

Southern CT, along I-95 is extremely expensive. The Danbury area and places along I-84 are more reasonably priced. The towns surrounding Hartford are very reasonable and many have excellent school districts. FM me if you have any questions.

My grandparents have a summer house in New Milford and we spent every summer there growing up. It is nice, but I need to be closer to a main area for convenience. My cousin lives in Danbury and he loves it, it is right outside of NY!

We were thinking of moving there but decided to stay on LI. We drove around a few towns. Trumbull seemed nice and seemed somewhat affordable.

DH lived in CT for 10+ years (Stamford, Norwalk and Fairfield.)

We have friends that live in Wilton, Ridgefield and Newtown. Wilton is just like the N. Shore of LI in every way (from looks to cost). Ridgefield is a mix. I love the town! The homes can vary greatly in the area from huge estates to small ranches. Newtown was much more rural (our friend lives on 8 acres on a lake), but it seems to have caught on b/c I see a lot of new construction there.

I love Ridgefield. My brother and SIL live there and the town is SO beautiful. It seriously looks like a postcard during the holidays.

Re: Can someone tell me about CT?

My sister lives in CT, more specifically the Brookline section of Fairfield. It's really a beautiful area. The homes are old, but really well maintained. The neighbors seem really great and all around the same age. My sister and BIL moved up there knowing no one and now they have a great group of friends who get together for dinner and play groups.

my in laws live in Trumbull and it borders where we live in Monroe-
Houses range from (what we saw when we were looking) ranches-$400.00+ to houses that are over a million! it depends on where you are...their house goes for about 550-600

----------------
Monroe- similar prices-we got lucky with our houseChat Icon great house, great price-great area

Newtown-a bit more $ than Trumbull,monroe

Ridgefield- really nice area too- but more money than Trumbull-
close to Danbury

(look in Shelton-huntington- there are some really nice areas- it also borders Monroe- (be careful, some areas are not that great-but houses in nice areas are less than Trumbull/Monroe etc... Schools- are good- NOT as good as the other towns I mentioned though

My brother and sister bought a new home in Shelton/Huntington 2 years ago in a new development (Scenic Lane Estates) and they love the area. Before that, they lived in Fairfield. My brother works in Stamford.

I went to Catholic high school in the Town Plot area of Waterbury, right across the street from the Waterbury Country Club. That was a nice area - but other than that, I don't know any other nice areas of Waterbury Chat Icon There are many nice towns around Waterbury though.

I don't know anything about Bristol.

Re: Can someone tell me about CT?

I live in CT, so feel free to FM me with any questions.

We moved here 3 years ago...I am from LI originally.

We live in the farmington valley area. It includes the towns of Avon, Farmington, Canton, Simsbury and Granby. All are wondeful towns with the best school districts in the state. I absolutely love it here, it's similar to LI but less congested and a heck of a lot prettier. We just moved to our second house, we paid well under $400K for a 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath house.

The south shore of CT is pricey, and IMO I would never live there because of the reliance of using I-95 to travel. Chat Icon It is congested at any given moment. Up where I live (central CT, west of Hartford) I have rarely seen traffic.

Waterbury...yuck, not a good area. It's a city, defintely lots of crime, etc.

Bristol is "okay". The schools are only so-so, and it's not my favorite area. You'd be better off looking at Southington, Chesire, Burlington and Farmington.

HTH!
