Can someone please explain this to me re: 2 yr old nap time.

DS is clearly tired. Tells me a few times in the hour leading up to his nap that he is tired. Nap time comes - he is rubbing his eyes the whole time we read stories, laying his head on my shoulder saying how sleepy he is. THEN - he gets in the crib and all of a sudden his energy is back 150%. He is running back and forth, singing and dancing, banging on the crib and talking away. This continues until I take him out about 30min-and hour later. At which point he tells me how tired he is and for the rest of the day.

WHAT GIVES? We are on week 3 of this now. No naps at all. He is 23 months old. Any insight?

I usually leave my son until he falls asleep. Sometimes he plays in there for a while, and sometimes he goes right to sleep.

But at what time do you call it a day? I mean - sometimes this goes on for an hour. I figure after 45 min or so he is not going to sleep? He used to fall asleep within 10 min!

If he is acting very tired leading up to naptime maybe try putting him in for his nap a little earlier. I know for my DS there is a small window where he is tired and will nap, and then if I wait to long I lose my chance for a napChat Icon
I will leave him up there playing for about an hour and then get him, b/c there are days I know he will just never end up falling asleep.

It really depends... If I feel he is not tired then I take him out. If not I've learned to leave him in there for as long as it takes... Most of the time it is within an hour.

I never leave him crying though, he is always pretty happy in there.

That's what works for me. I know if I didn't leave him he would never nap, and he would be cranky come dinner time.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Seems that maybe he is overtired by the time he gets in the crib, and can't settle himself. Put him in 30 min earlier and see what happens. Chat Icon

Thanks ladies - earlier actually doesn't help. I've tried this. Today I actually put him to sleep an hour later and after 45 min he fell asleep Chat Icon

The bad thing is is now it is just too close to bed time and i fear he won't sleep at night Chat Icon

How many hours after your DC wakes up from their nap do they go to bed? TIA!

What time did you put him down? My DD (2 y/o) usually naps from around 2:30/3:00 till anywhere between 5 and 6. She usually goes to bed around 8:30/9 without any problems.

Hmmm maybe I am doing it backward then - too little time in the morning and not enough at night?

His old schedule was Bedtime from 10-10:30- and he would wake up between 9:30 and 10:30 in the morning and then nap b/w 2:30-3:30. for an hour and 1/2. I've been putting him down around 3. Today he woke up at 10:30 and I put him down around 3:45. He fell aslep at 4:30 and just woke up now - i hope he sleeps tonight - but Chat Icon b/c this is the first time he has napped in a week. He was up for about 1.5 hrs around 3am though Chat Icon
