Can someone help me with reading levels?

My 6 year old just finished kindergarten DD scored an H in independent reading and and I in instructional reading.

What books should I be getting her to read? The packet sent home suggests books up to E which she has passed do I still just get her E books and how do I know what letter a book falls too? Chat Icon

ETA: what is instructional reading level books?

Re: Can someone help me with reading levels?

Does your library have a color coding system?
Our library color codes the books by reading level- So C,D and E are orange F,G and H are green and so on.

When DD finished K last year the teacher told me her letter and I was able to find that letter in the color coded section and she picked books from there.
As she read more she was able to jump letters and we just moved up that way

There is also an app I have on my phone from Scholastic- it only works on books published by them but you can scan the bar code and it tells you the level the book is.
I have also googled, what level book is "such and such" and the letters will come up.
Or you can google - list of books that are reading Level H - if you want a reading list to find

Independent reading level is the level she can read confortably on her own with barely any help. The instructional level will be more of a reach for her and is the level she can read with the teacher's help

I would start her with the H and as the summer progresses move her up to the I

Don't feel bad. I had never been to ours until the summer after Kindergarten either.
Now we go all the time for her to get books to read. I don't like buying books because of the clutter and she'll read them once and never read them again.
The librarians in the children's room should be able to help you.

Independent means she can read and comprehend books on that level. Instructional means books on that letter are the ones she should be working on.

Google "Guided Reading Level I books" and there are some resources and title lists from other schools.

Comparison Chart

I can Read Levels

Posted some links that helped me see where my kid was and what it meant.

He read a lot of the "I can read" level books, so maybe you can start there.

This site can be helpful (as long as the level is by Fountas & Pinnell). There are some great suggested books but also don't get too caught up on the level. Kids will generally read higher interest level books better than a boring book on their level lol. Happy reading!

When I first saw the subject, my first thought was, "When the bubble is in between the lines, then you know that the item is flat and level...."

Booksource.com is a good site to find out the level of a book if you have a title in mind. It's a shopping site, but it tells you the F and P level as well as Lexile level. In your situation, I'd use it if there is a title she is interested in.
Definitely pick H books, with I or even J sprinkled in. As others mentioned, Instructional is with help. If reading i books together, there are plenty of simple strategies you can use to help her and enhance her comprehension (i.e. Asking her questions, stopping and pausing to think out loud about the part you just read--if reading aloud together, etc.) if you're interested I can email you what skills and questions she should be doing at her level.
