I'm fairly new to this. I've just started teaching myself again as I have not done this since I was a little girl with my grandmother. But anyway, I've taught myself the basics by watching YouTube videos and I'd like to try my hand at a hat pattern I found that seems fairly easy. I've listed the first three steps below. The part I need help with is round 2 and round 3. In round 2 it says "chain 2, then crochet a half double crochet into the same stitch". When it says "the same stitch" is it talking about the first chain that you crocheted the 7 Half Double Crochets into in round 1? In round 3 it says "chain 2, then crochet a half double crochet into the same stitch". I pretty much just need to know what that same stitch is. Does this make sense how i'm asking it? TIA!!!

Round 1~ Taking your 6.00mm crochet hook and chocolate brown yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 2 Chains. Crochet 7 Half Double Crochets into the first chain you made. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 8 half double crochets now.

Round 2~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. Crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 16 half double crochets now.

Round 3~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 24 half double crochets now.

when you start a new row/round in crochet, the initial chains are considered the first stitch.

by reading the rest of the round, each stitch in round 1 gets two stitches in round 2. so you're going to make the 2 chain stitches and then the first half double crochet will go into the slip stitch where you joined round 1.

you'll do the same thing in round 3.

by doing this, you'll be increasing quickly to make the crown of the hat.

hope that helps
