Can someone explain a garbage disposal
I'm home challenged. We just moved into our new condo and it has a garbage disposal and I am not exactly sure what to do with it.
Do I cover it when I turn it on? How often do I turn it on? For how long?
Help!!!

just shove the food in and turn it on with the water running. it will get quieter when all the food is ground up...you'll hear it running, but you won't hear the grinding. you'll love it! i miss my garbage disposal, our new town doesn't allow them.

Don't stick your hand or any utensils into it, and watch to make sure you don't lose the occasional spoon or fork in there - it chews them up pretty good.

The OP pretty much covered it--we have one in our new house, and let me tell you...I never knew I wanted one so badly!! We haven't had any nasty smells coming out of our garbage since we move here--all the food garbage goes down the disposal!

why don't houses on LI have this wonderful invention? 
everywhere else in the US has them - even in apartments.

because if you have a cesspool, you cant use a garbage disposal. If you are hooked up to sewers its different.

I would guess that houses in Nassau don't have them either, that I know of. I grew up there and never saw one in any house I've been to.
