Re: Can my 12 month old eat fish sticks?
Has she had any other allergies? DD never did and she had fish sticks at that time with no issues. Not sure on the rule of how long to wait though!

Re: Can my 12 month old eat fish sticks?
I know you said you were going to wait, but my ped gave me the go ahead at 12 months and there have been recent studies that say the longer you wait to introduce foods the more likely they will develop an allergy, which is completely opposite to what the thinking used to be...who knows what to believe anymore.

Well, if you have a fish allergy, then I may wait. But fish sticks are usually white fish and are fine!

Re: Can my 12 month old eat fish sticks?
I would ask your ped - ours said no shellfish yet (I think he said 3 or 4 but can't remember - DH is allergic to crab) but white fish like flounder, mahi mahi, cod, tuna (but very limited b.c of mercury) etc was okay to give her at 12 months.

My friend gives these to her daughter and says she loved them. I keep forgetting to look for them at the supermarket. What kind of fish is in them?

Re: Can my 12 month old eat fish sticks?
We gave DD fish (all types) to try once she was a year. Here's what I read from the babycenter website:
Crab, shrimp, and other shellfish make the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology's list of most common food allergens, so many experts recommend that you introduce these foods slowly and only after your child's first birthday, when his immune and digestive systems are more fully developed. "If your family has a history of food allergies, hold off until at least age 3," says Marilyn Tanner, a registered dietitian at St. Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.
Signs of a food allergy include swelling of the tongue, lips, and face; a skin rash; wheezing; abdominal cramping; vomiting; and diarrhea. If your baby develops any of these symptoms after eating shellfish or any other food, call his doctor as soon as possible.
That said, keep in mind that only 4 to 6 percent of infants and young children develop a food allergy. And if you lived in Asia or a Scandinavian country, where fish is a dietary mainstay, your baby would probably sample a variety of fish even before eating meat or chicken. But in the United States, it's customary to introduce fish and shellfish after a baby has accepted both pureed fruits and vegetables and strained meats and poultry.
If you have no family history of shellfish allergies and you want to try feeding shellfish to your baby before 12 months, wait until he's at least 6 months old and start with shellfish that's easy to puree, such as crab or lobster. Wait until he's able to chew other finger foods successfully before offering him fingertip-size pieces of shrimp and other shellfish that are harder to puree. Introduce only one type of shellfish at a time.
The American Academy of Pediatrics warns that children shouldn't eat raw or undercooked shellfish, including dishes like ceviche (which is prepared by soaking the seafood in an acidic citrus marinade to "cold cook" it). Raw or partly cooked fish may contain bacteria and viruses that can be tolerated by healthy adults but make young children seriously ill.

My DS has had fish sticks (19 months) -- I tried when he was around a year and he wanted no part. At 19 months I tried again and he ate them up!

Re: Can my 12 month old eat fish sticks?
I guess this is a case of differing opinions. DS has been eating fish and shellfish for months (he's just over 12 mos now). My ped is of the mind (and I agree) that the longer we wait to introduce foods (including nuts, et al) the higher instance of food allergies.
But if you have a fish allergy, then maybe wait at least until your next checkup with the lovely Nina and double check with your ped

Lovely! He told me 2-3 for actual peanuts or peanut butter but b/c of of choking, not allergies. His exact quote was "we know a kid has a nut allergy when he steps on them". He said peanut oil, sesame oil - all of the "allergy" stuff was fine b/c of their form. Ah, gotta love it
ETA: for the fish I actually specifically said "Oh, but not shrimp or lobster or anything, right?" and his response was "Why not?". Do you have allergies in your family maybe? This is just weird - it's like two different people!

I give them to Lily. She just wont' eat them. If you have an allergy, I'd wait, or ask the doctor though.
