Can I find out?
So in our long journey of a house hunt I sportically posted about it but we finally found a house... Yay- so in doing additional research I pulled various reports online for any criminal activity within 1 mile or anyone with a record within 1 mile. 1 person popped up. Would this deter your from a house? Also can you call the local police station to find out more information? We love this house but this may be a deal breaker for us

One person in 1 mile wouldn't deter me. It could really be for anything. I think there is a specific search you can do for sex offenders, that might be more important if you have children.
I don't think you can get details from the police department.

If there is a sex offender within a few blocks that would deter me, otherwise no it wouldn't.

You won't find a town or zip without an incident recently or two. Even in the nicest of areas.

Sex offender near by would bother me, but I don't think you will be able to find most places without someone convicted of something.

From what I was able to see the time served was 12 years and parole was another 7 the crime was 25 years ago so on the site it says that no additional information disclosed after parole. There's very little info including type of crime and such... It could be anything DH said that I can't control everything. We could buy the house and a sex offender can move in next door. I know I can't control the neighbors I'm just overly cautious. I don't even walk to my car alone after dark even if it's right outside

Every single town has criminals in it. It would only deter me if there was a sex offender on in my immediate neighborhood.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm assuming it's not a sex offender because there is a school 3 blocks away and I think they can't live within 1 mile of a school?! Not sure though. Overall we have enjoyed the neighborhood but we are going to take a ride through tonight as well since we have never been at night. Thanks again!

Exactly this! Even if you can find a town that does not have even one crime that does not mean that someone will not move in and have a record.

Exactly this! Even if you can find a town that does not have even one crime that does not mean that someone will not move in and have a record.
If you find a town like that I'd assume a lot gets swept under the rug to maintain that reputation.

Honestly, I'd be more concerned about what isn't reported. There could be anything going on anywhere around you. I wouldn't let that stop me from buying a house.

Not true as we had one less than a mile but I really wouldn't worry about this as there is crime everywhere you go. You can NOT find someplace that has 0%, anywhere.

I would never have even thought to look into this!! I just checked and there's a few sex offenders in my area. I think it's horrible but just like anywhere else you have to be careful! It wouldn't have deterred me in buying the house. I know my neighborhood is good.

I have found with sex offenders that they seem to move a lot. I get the notifications and I'm told when they move in and it seems that many of them move on fairly quickly.

No. Would not deter me. Also, a mile all around the house is a pretty big area, especially for LI where houses are close together. I would not let it bother me at all.
