Can anyone help me? BF moms who supplement...
DD just turned 9 months - and recently with running around for a few hours every day BF is not always convenient depending on where we are and I have had some trouble pumping more than 1 bottle recently- so I am ready to supplement DD with some formula. - Her ped said to start with Similac Advanced - but stupid me forgot to ask how much to give her.
DD doesn't drink a consistent amount - if I give her 4 ounces she wants 5 if I give her 5 she drinks 3 - 4 1/2.
Do I give the same amount as I would if I pumped?
I'm not sure she liked it - I tried to give her 4 ounces of the formula this afternoon - but she gulped down 1 1/2 then didn't want anymore - and wasn't hungry for quite some time.
She has been a bit gassy - but not upset or spitting up in any way - is that the formula? Should I keep giving it to her if it makes her fart a lot or is that mean it isn't agreeing with her???
Sorry I'm have never given her formula before so these are probably stupid questions.

i would start with giving the same amount as you would give of breastmilk and go from there.
has your baby been taking a bottle all this time, or is it possible that it's the bottle causing the gas rather than the formula? cause that's what happened to me - i was convinced it was the formula but it was actually the bottle. once i switched to dr. brown's all the gas resolved.
if it's not the bottle, it may be the formula, but i would stick with it for a little bit to see if that's just her body adjusting. it may go away with a little time.

I don't have any experience with supplimenting. I just wanted to say that if you've been noticing a dip in your pumping supply, AF may be on the way (if she hasn't showed up yet.) A lot of women notice their supply drop around the time of AF and even sometimes during ovulation.

I would say give her the same amount, but I will tell u that I started DD out on Similac Advance, and she had issues with it. It made her very gassy. So the doc had me switch to Enfamil Gentlease. She takes that much better with less gas issues.

No she has been taking a bottle of pumped milk when we go out - b.c I'm not comfortable BF her in public - and depending on where we are going or who I go out with - I can't always find a quiet lounge etc to BF. She has been taking 1-2 bottles everyday now for a few months (although she did refuse a bottle from weeks 15/16- 25/26 or so).

Unfortunately I think that "might" be what happened -I used to be able to pump the milk when I got home that she got the bottle for - but then I got AF with no warning on 3/5 and every since my supple is great for what she eats off the breast (she is eating normally that way and seems satisfied) but I can only pump about 1.5-2.5 ounces in the morning and 1.5-2.5 in the evening -she drinks 4-5 ounces - so that is really only 1 bottle I am getting and I need 1-3 depending on the day. Since then the supply hasn't gotten better.
She is 9 months and I wanted to make it to 12 months then stop - but I'm afraid if I supplement that I will be stopping even sooner. I'm VERY sad about it - b.c she really loves that time and so do I - but I don't want to BF her forever so I guess the dip is inevitable.

Should I pick up a small amount of that too and give it a try or stick with the similac advanced?

I don't BF, but my friend is a NICU nurse (and she actually did BF her daughter) and she said that Gentlease and Nestle Good Start are the most similar to breast milk.
You can just switch to Gentlease (my DS started taking it for gas issues as well) but it only comes in powder and I'd just switch, don't swithc back and forth between the Similac and Gentlease. HTH!

For whatever reason, Gentlease only comes in powder. Which I kind of think is funny because you shake it (or stir it) and most people think the bubbles cause gas
ETA: I'm not sure if it is better, it is less expensive and we've been using it since DS was 8 weeks old and was switched to Gentlease.

I will give her one more day with the similac than I will try that one.
