Camping in Cabin

I have never been camping and thought I never would but I'm looking for a dirt cheap vacation idea for me, DH and 2 boys, 3 and 6. I'm considering camping if we can stay in a tiny cabin structure. Can anyone recommend a place? TIA!!!

Re: Camping in Cabin

We are actually going the first week in August to Ponderosa Campground. Haven't been yet so can't tell you, but hoping it's fun. Only a few days. I can't go camping longer than that.

Cabin camping isn't dirt cheap unfortunately. It's usually at least $100 a night, not sure of your budget. We have stayed in the Cub Huts at Lake Compounce's campground called Bear Creek. TINY, $100 a night, no bathroom, but their facilities are clean and new. You cook outside. Only a small fridge in the cub hut.

We have also cabin camped at KOA Mystic...nice deluxe cabin. That was around $200 a night though. They have bare bones ones though with no bathroom.

Also did Jellystone in Lancaster...they are expensive, but super nice campground.

Thanks for the responses. For those prices I'll pass. Thought maybe I was missing a hidden gem somewhere. I'll save my $$$ for a real vacation. :)

Re: Camping in Cabin

Several state parks have cabins. It costs about $60 a night but doesn't really include much inside except the beds. Bathrooms and showers are outside. Nice porch and fire ring to cook dinner or have smores.

We tent camp at Kettletown State Park in CT.
They have these cabins. Looks nice. Close to a lot of places including amusement parks. Might be fun for a night for you.

At those ages, why not borrow a tent (reach out to your FB friends) & try camping? It's not relaxing... but it will make memories and be dirt cheap.

NYS has a website for camping and is a great resource to check out prices!

our boys are also 3 and 6. we stayed at a cabin at a KOA near niagara- and it was great. had its own bathroom, queen bed for DH and i, little kitchenette area with mini fridge, microwave, sink... and a little room with bunk beds for our boys. it had the linens already there which was nice. grill and fire pit outside for cooking. BUT it wasn't dirt cheap- it was about the same as a hotel would be $100/ $150 a night. but the experience was neat Chat Icon making s'mores on the campfire at night and all that.

ANOTHER option would be maybe renting an RV. Cruise America is a company that rents all over the country. we've done that a couple times and it was neat. same idea-- camping, but you still have electric, water, real bathroom LOL only thing with that is the RV is also your vehicle if you plan to go around sight seeing during the day... so you kind of have to pack and unpack stuff if you're gonna be going around doing any like touring around or whatever
