Cali from top to bottom!
DH and I wanna do a California trip...starting in SF/Napa, doing that for a few days....then going down to LA/Hollywood for a few days, and then San Diego and La Jolla for a few days...
Anyone know what the best way to do this trip is? Any recs on where to stay?
Should we fly from SF to LA or suck it up and do the 9-10 hour drive because its pretty? Is there anything to see on the way?
Any help would be appreciated! We are looking at September.
TIA!

Re: Cali from top to bottom!
DH and i had an AMAZING trip to CA in Feb. Landed in SF, spent 2.5 days there (not really enough but the weather really impinged on our sightseeing- dreadful rain and biting cold). One of those days was spent on a day trip to Napa and Sonoma, but I would have preferred to drive it on our own (we did a tour).
I also wish we had time to see the redwoods but alas, didnt.
We then rented a car and drove down to Carmel by the Sea, had lunch.
Drove to Big Sur, stayed in Glen Oaks Big sur- absolutely amazing, you MUST stay there (in the cabins)! IT was our most favorite part of the trip.
Drove to LA, stayed with friends overnight. Drove to San Diego, stayed with friends for 3 days (not nearly long enough!)
All in all an amazing trip!!!!

How many days did you do total? We are thinking of 10-12?

Re: Cali from top to bottom!
Driving from SF to LA isn't that long. If you take I-5 - it's probably only 6 or so hours (we made it from la Jolla to Oakland in 6 hours)...PCH will take a little bit longer, but it's a super nice drive (SF to la Jolla was 12 hours for us)

Re: Cali from top to bottom!
VERY pricey but if you can, check out Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur.

Re: Cali from top to bottom!
We did this for our honeymoon, I think we did it over 16 days. We flew into Oakland, stayed in Sausalito and did SF for 3 days. Then went to Napa/Sonoma for 7 days. Drove down Rt.1 and stayed at Monterey for 2 nights, then took I-5 and stopped in Ventura for 1 night and then to San Diego for a few nights (we skipped LA) and flew out of San Diego. It was the best trip ever. We stayed at some amazing places (let me know if you want specific rec's on hotels) and it was so relaxing to go at our own pace.

I'd love some!
Do you mind laying out the exact itinerary you did? I'd like to work off something!

Re: Cali from top to bottom!
we did this trip 2 years ago. Our friend lives in La Jolla, and we were going out there for her wedding, so we made a vacation out of it one of the BEST trips ever!!! we went for 10 days total, i think. I'll try to remember what we did! LOL Flew in San Fran and spent 3 nights there ( took a day trip to Napa Valley, saw alcatraz, fisherman's wharf, had dinner in Sausalito (just across the GG bridge). we spent another night in monterey. spent one night in huntington beach, one night in a really cute town called Solvang (like a Danish town). We stayed at a cute hotel called Wine Valley inn, or something like that. then, we spent 3 nights in San Diego. Some things we did: The drive along the PCH is amazing!!! we went to Muhr Woods (redwood forrest). we checked out Hurst Castle, which was really neat. Spent a day in Santa Barbara, and loved that. Did 17 mile drive by Pebble Beach, spent a couple hours walking around LA, went to the San Diego Zoo. Dhs friend that was with us in San Diego is into sailing, so we rented a sailboat with him and went sailing in the San Diego Bay. Went to the san diego zoo, did a little hiking in Torrey Pines preserve... basically, we just bought a couple guidebooks about the area and picked the things we wanted to see and mapped it all out. The only hotels we reserved ahead of time were in San Fran and San Diego. The rest, we just winged it. ONE THING to watch out for.... we flew into San Fran, and home from San Diego. The one way rental car was EXPENSIVE!! they charged a huge fee for it. We were ok with it, because we used hotel points for a lot of the nights we were there, so it evened out. But just something to watch out for when planning.
