cabinet refacing
Did anyone ever have this done?
I know little about it...
1. Is is significantly less expensive than new cabinets?
2. Is the quality good?
I've heard mixed things. I think we'll probably just leave our cabinets as they are (they're in good shape)... I was just curious to know more about refacing. I know replacing is the best option, but just curious if refacing does look nice or if you can tell...

Re: cabinet refacing
We had ours done by one of the big companies.
Not significantly cheaper than some brands of cabinets. Ikea cabinets are GREAT quality and very reasonably priced. We would have been better off doing that.
In spite of the fact that the sales person will tell you it's wood, it is not. It's formica. Looks like cheap crap. I hate my kitchen and can not wait until we can redo it again.

Re: cabinet refacing
I have a friend that refaced and her kitchen is beautiful. I was surprised at how nice it came out. She added corbels (sp), granite counters and all. Her situation is that her kitchen is very large and the existing cabinets were good qualtity to begin with. I think this is important. I think the refacing and granite came in at about 17K. Other then the fact that she's still happy, three years later, that's all I know.
ETA she used a solo contractor from Northport, and not a big company.
