Buying a Home

So after being in negotiations the last two weeks, I had a lightbulb moment that makes me feel empowered.
We as the buyers are the commodity. There will always be another house out there that, with sellers who are more than happy to take my money. There are so many houses on the market, and honestly I'm in no rush to go over my budget.

The homeowners in this case countered our original offer with a reduction of 15,000 from their asking price.

I met them halfway between our initial price and what they came back to us with.

They came back to us AFTER A WEEK and an open house(!) with the same number.

So we have a few things happening here,
1) they had no other offers on the house
2) they think the house is worth more than we do

I dug my heels in and said no, that's an insult we came up you come down or no deal.
We're still waiting to hear back but it felt so empowering to say NO, this is my money.
I don't have a house to sell, YOU do!

You can say no deal and I'll be fine and continue my house search.

Do we want this house? Yes, it will be perfect after we fix it up but I'm not willing to be cash poor for it either.

Just wanted to share what's going on. It feels good to get it out as well!!

Thank you! When they came back with the first counter I felt like a little kid being granted an opportunity but then it clicked, I'm not doing them a favor neither are they for me. It's all a game Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Yes, I felt the same way. I walked away from two houses and found one that worked with us. Yes, it was a short sale and it was only the bank to have a say, but I felt like dancing saying no.Chat Icon

We did this on our new house. Our final offer sat out there for a month! So you just never know. You have to be patient!!!

Re: Buying a Home

this happened to us when we were house hunting a few years ago... 2 sons were selling their mother's home. it needed a lot of work and we refused to go up past a certain amount... in fact they said they were "insulted" by our offer.... turns out the house sat there on the market months later, until they sold it at near what we offered for it!

I guess if it's an estate sale, or older people who have moved to an old age home (which is my case) I think there's a lot more sentimental value to it, which some people can't look past.

*sigh*

I did the same thing. I had my limit and was not about to go over it. Eventually they came down.

This happened to us too! We made our best offer, he refused, then came back a few weeks later and wanted to accept. We were already in contract on a house that is better for us! Kicker for us is that we live down the street from that house now and it's back on the market for what we offered!

We're in the same exact boat and I feel the same way. The seller has been dragging his feet on whether or not to accept our final offer. It has been weeks. I really hope to find a house that we like better so I can rescind our offer. The seller has been a jerk about everything that I don't even want to give him a single dollar.
