Burping

New mom question- I have a 1.5 week old daughter who is formula fed. It is so hard to get her to burp and often times, I can't get one! I use the Dr. Brown bottles. Anyone else have this difficulty with their LO?

How do you burp her? I used to sit dd on my knee and like bend her over my arm to put pressure on her belly. So kinda slumped over. If that makes sense. Or her belly on my shoulder to put pressure there to push the burp out.

At our very very first doctors visit, our pediatrician told us that if she didn't burp after a minute of trying, she didn't have to burp right then. Dd was never a big bumper, especially with the dr. Browns.

Burping

Congrats!!! DS was a terrible burper. I've heard that if they don't burp within a minute of trying, they do not have to, but DS always got very cranky if he didn't burp. We couldn't burp him the traditional way. We would either keep one hand on his belly and slump him so his head was over his feet and pat him, or (the best way for us), hold him under both arms and slowly raise and lower him (he was in a sitting position and he butt always stayed on our knees) while he was sitting on my knee. It's kind of hard to explain, but if you hold the baby where you're supporting her under her arms with your pointer finger and thumb under her arms and then the rest of your fingers to support her head, gently lift her up and down to contract her diaphragm. Maybe it will work for you too. Good luck!

It's pretty typical. Some babies just don't burp easily. It might make them uncomfortable, but it's not dangerous. Try different positions to see what works.

For DS, he had to be higher on my shoulder so there was a little pressure on his tummy. And instead of patting his back, I would just rub it in circles. Sometimes standing helped, too. Just the jiggle helped to work any air up and out of him.
