BTDT Moms...What do we really need the first few weeks!!!!

OK, so I just came back from a store that was trying to charge me an arm and a leg for a layette set...I ended up leaving with a take me home outfit, a few of those onesie things that can be worn as gowns and then made into onesies with legs some hats and the carters snap front shirts...I have a bunting, am getting a bundle me. I know I'm going to need burp cloths, a miracle blanket or swaddler, towels and wash cloths, socks...she's going to be in a bassinet for the first month or so, so mattress pad and anything else for the crib doesn't need to be done asap...I need to know absolute essentitals that I need...
So any sage advice would be great..bc I'm not spending what they wanted me spending on all this stuff!!!!!!

hmmmm I am trying to think of what else you didnt already list.

-for you - overnight pads for the bleeding & if you arents BF'ing, when you leak you can cut the pads in half and stick them on your bra. (a lot cheaper than the nursing pads)

- batteries! Our bassinet vibrates and that has helped on the middle of the night , I never want to run out of batteries!

- bottle brush

Thanks so much...as for me, I'm going to get the pump and everything that goes along with it, I'm more looking at what I need for the baby the first few days as a must, besides the obvious diapers etc....
THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN!!!Chat Icon

Diapers!!! I am trying to make sure I have enough diapers so that I won't have to run out and get some.

Pacifier (if you're planning to using one)

Re: BTDT Moms...What do we really need the first few weeks!!!!

you'll need some hooded towels, extra sheets for the bassinett, a pad that goes under the babies head in the bassinett so in case they spit up you don't have to change the sheets a million times, tons of burp cloths, cotton balls for wiping the baby's eyes when you bathe them, onesies and gowns - the more the better, a monitor and extra batteries, soft paper towels or disposable cloths b/c you can't use wipes in the beginning, a basin for warm soapy water to sponge bathe the baby, dreft or some other baby safe detergent, pacifiers if you are going to use them a sterilizer if you are using bottles or one of those dishwasher baskets for all the bottle parts, a bottle drying rack, extra level 1 nipples.

That's what I can think of off the top of my head. The most important thing is the support of your family - don't be too proud to ask for help in the beginning - it's ok to be scared!

my pleasure - I wish I had been smart enough to ask this same question before I had my dd - I must have sent my poor dh to the store a dozen times in the first couple of weeks! Good luck! Chat Icon

Honestly, just diapers and a few pajamas.

I hated those gowns with the elastic on the bottom, some people love them. It really is trial and error at the beginning nad you will find what you need as time goes on.

I wouldn't even buy that many diapers, you don't know sizes or what brands DC would like.

Re: BTDT Moms...What do we really need the first few weeks!!!!

some great posts!

how about
creamy vaseline and hand sanitizer
baby q-tips for cleaning the cord stump
aquafor
lap pads are great
some formula (if BFing doesn't work out...that's what happened for me...had to pump exclusively and supplement)
I liked shirts/onesies with the sleeve cuff b/c the no-scratch mittens are a waste!
definitely get the miracle blanket (at least 2...you want 2-3 of most things b/c one in the wash, one in use, one as a backup)
lots of wash cloths
get the cloth diapers as burp cloths (as a mom of a DD who spits up like a camel, trust me these are the best) and bibs (if you can) that are absorbent, have good velcro, and aren't white (they stain easily)
boppy and a couple covers
a couple receiving blankets
I'm sure you have a few seats to put LO down in
a few different kinds of bottles/nipples

don't forget to take everything you can get your hands on at the hospital...take a big bag to put in all in!
