BTDT Moms: Genetic Counseling

Hi Ladies, I am told this is a great place for support....

I am almost 14 weeks and my DR just called with my NT results. They came back abnormal, there is a 1 out of 278 chance for Downs... I am going to counseling next week with a Genetics Counselor. Can anyone speak to what I should expect? I am 28 so the number should be 1 out of 700.

I am so worried and my DH is also concerned.

Any advice is much appreciated!

talk to your family - learn you mom's and mil's history of miscarriages - also any siblings - this was info that we were asked

they went through our history - and we were given a choice if we wanted to do an amnio - we chose not too for our family but based on a lot research it was not because of the risks of the amnio - the rate of miscarraiges from an amnio seems high but they have shown that a lot of the miscarriages should have happened because of amnormailities - i recomebnd doing your own research - will you worry the whole time and what you will accept and do with the knowledge if you had it

testing is a very personal decision

eta - i hope everything turns out well for you - in our case we have a healthy son and our odds were worse than that - everything looked fine at the 20 week sono for us

I had a smiliar thing happen to me only I was a few years older. I was told that the NT results can be scewed and that there is sometimes false positives. I wanted to take another test around 16 weeks I think - a quad screening maybe? I'm forgetting and once I took that test it showed everything was okay. I still went ahead and had an amnio because I was nervous but everything turned out fine and I have a healthy baby girl! It's scary but not uncommon!!

I didnt experience this but sending you lots of prayers and hugs baby is just fine
