BTDT: GD Moms
Hi :)
I have 2 questions:
1) are your numbers ever out of range? When does it become an "issue"? I would obviously like to avoid being medicated, but every couple of days, I get one reading that is a few points over (like 125 instead of 120). Or sometimes my fasting # is a little high (93 or 94). Is that going to be an issue when I meet with my dr this week?
2) this is for the Moms that had GD and already delivered. After delivery, were you still treated as a diabetic? I'm dying for some chocolate and wanted to prepare myself in case I will still be restricted in the Hospital.
Also, some of you girls will post how you "cheat".... Don't your numbers go crazy? Doesn't your doctor question that when they see your log?
Thank you!!!!

Re: BTDT: GD Moms
1. It depends on the Dr/practice. My numbers were out of range, but not consecutively, but enough of the time with a variety of meals that it warranted me to start insulin. It's honestly a little prick in the leg to give, just like when you test your blood sugars.
2. The Drs assumed I was no longer diabetic and I had free range to eat/drink whatever I wanted. I wanted blueberry muffins as soon as I delivered DD and my ILs had a box waiting in the waiting room for when DH came out to announce the news. At 2am, they were a godsend!
However, they will keeping an eye on your DC to ensure their sugar levels are ok, so expect them to be testing your DC by pricking their foot. DD had low blood sugars and had to be given formula since she wasn't latching well and getting what she needed from me.
3. As for cheating....yes, but I don't do it consistently as it's not healthy for the baby. Maybe once a week I do, but I try not to. I cheat between meals. For instance, I will have a low carb breakfast bar/yogurt and then eat a larger breakfast or a Danish, etc. Then, I make my next meal slightly less carbs.

Thank you! I haven't "cheated" yet. Beyond having a bigger roll with dinner than I probably should, etc. I'm trying really hard to eat the right way for the babies.
And that makes me so happy that you had free range once you they were delivered!! Mmm blueberry muffins!

if you are craving the carbs at meal time, try whole wheat or whole grain breads. It may help your numbers.
This is my second time having it, so I understand it a bit better than when I first had it with DD. My goal is to keep my weight level and be able to deliver a healthy sized baby rather than risk a C-section.
One positive is that we get to see our babies weekly on the sono and can't go beyond our due date!

I had numbers out of range on occasion. If i had a higher than range number, I just made sure my next meal was better. My doctors had no problems with the occasional high number. I was told if I had more than 2 high numbers in a row while following the GD diet (not from cheating), then to call. However, that never happened with me. I did have more than the occasional higher than range fasting # and at around 30w, i was put on Metformin at night to help my fasting #'s.
In the hospital, I had blood sugar checks every few hours including 2 hours after meals. After I gave birth, they tested my blood sugar for an additional day and since they were all within range, I didn't have to do it anymore. My doctor told me that I am no longer considered diabetic and I could discontinue taking Metformin. I have to go back in 3 months to get tested.
DD also had her blood sugar tested after birth and for a few hours after that and was within range for each one.
I cheated. A lot. I was really diligent in the beginning but I was GD since 13w and was getting frustrated that I couldn't give in to any cravings I had. I was also losing a lot of weight and was told to not be as strict! My log had a notes section so if I did cheat and my # ended up being higher, I made a note of what I ate so they knew.
ETA: I honestly feel like I was misdiagnosed. I never had a problem controlling my numbers unless I ate something truly terrible and high in carbs/low in protein. DD was born at 39w at 7lb5oz.

Thank you both. I've honestly been able to control it by cutting back my carbs a bit and upping my protein and veggies. If I eat a little more rhan i should, i fall a little out of range. i wasnt sure what my doctor would say. I'm just very conscious of what I eat, but I'm a TOTAL ice cream girl and this is painful!

I find that my morning numbers are what are out of range and I am on insulin..it's really not bad...in terms of day numbers..my highest has been like 123 or something and it's usually when I've eaten a "new" meal, so I will just not have that meal in the rotation..it's happened maybe 3 times in the last 6 weeks, so they are not concerned about my daytime numbers at all...I have no idea what happens after as I haven't gotten there yet, but I said I wanted some candy..that could change, though!
As for "cheating," I will sneak something small in during my longer time periods before testing, if that makes sense..then I always try to really balance all snacks and meals with protein/carb or more protein as I've been hungrier lately..if I tell you what I ate on my birthday and had a 113 after, you'd die....lol

LOL. This morning my fast number was 101 but I had nothing before bed differently than I have had other nights when I was fine. Ugh, I know it will be ok. Insulin is the worst case scenario, but I was hoping to avoid it.
Thank you for responding

Re: BTDT: GD Moms
1 & 3. The only time my numbers were out of range was when I wasn't spot on with my diet. I kept a journal of my food so I'd know what caused it. For example - Friday's fasting numbers were always high because of Thursday night pizza night!
2. For me, after I delivered that placenta...I was no longer a diabetic. They tested me while I was in the hospital & my numbers were always in range.
