BTDT: Cleaning up DC1 clothes for DC2

My DS2 is due the end of November, DS1 was also born in November. I am going through all DS1 clothes and finding myself saving more than donating Chat Icon So far all I donated/got rid of was onesies! All of DS1 clothes are in such good conditions I feel bad donating/getting rid of anything. How did you narrow down what to keep...obviously DS2 will get new clothes as presents, and I am positive I will be buying him things so I do not want to save too much.

I guess what I am asking how do I let go?

I don't know why you would? My ds are close in age and I hardly buy anything for ds2. I would rather spend more time and money on ds1's clothes, that will belong to ds2 next year. I'm doing that until they are old enough to care about specific style, etc.

I agree...keep everything you could possibly use! Then maybe use the $$ you saved for something fun for the kids, like a zoo or museum membership.

I wouldn't let anything go, especially if its in good condition. Save the money you would spend on new clothes for something special. Once your second DS grows out of the clothes, then I would donate them, but why not just keep them for now. If anything it's good to have extra changes of clothes on hand even of he will be wearing a lot of new stuff.

Keep everything! It is awesome to be able to reuse the old clothes in the same seasons. I have the same situation (but DDs) and saved everything.

i agree. we got some new things for dd2 but for the most part i reuse. its a little hard b/c dd1 is may and dd2 is march so they overlap a bit but dd2 is bigger so im using dd1s stuff earlier if that makes sense. i did go through and each time i change for size and toss what i don't like or has stains i didn't see before. i would and do buy stuff new for dd2 for special occasions. but i wouldn't give it away just to get new clothes. i just kinda fill in for dd2.

I wouldn't toss anything! My family has bins of baby clothing that started 10 yrs ago with my niece and as we had new babies we added to the collection. Dd is 7 months old and between hand me downs and gifts so far the only thing I've purchased for her are pjs. As dd outgrows stuff I pack it up and label it for the next
We only toss stuff that was stained

Totally keep everything. Why wouldn't you? Especially since it is the exact same season.

Re: BTDT: Cleaning up DC1 clothes for DC2

My DDs were also same season. I kept everything and re-used a lot of it.

I did however, feel that DD#2 deserved some of her own stuff, and deserved to have some new stuff too. So I did buy her stuff along the way. But it was nice to not have to buy an entire wardrobe for her. Also, DD#2 is much harder on clothes than DD#1, so needed more anyway. It was good to have an abundance.

I also felt bad that DD#1 go all brand new baby gear, and DD#2 was going to have all second-hand stuff. So how did I reconcile that in my mind? I splurged on her bedding set! Mommy felt better! Chat Icon

I had dd june 25th, 7 years later I had another dd june 27th. I saved everything pretty much up until around 9 months. After that, I saved what was still in good condition but things definately got more worn and distroyed. I even saved christmas outfits and halloween costumes. Of course I got new things, hand me downs, and had to do a little shopping myself but it all gets used.

Keep everything. My dd1 was born in June and dd2 this past February. So far I have been able to use all of DD1 clothes for my second baby despite being born in a different season. You also never know how your second baby will grow. Plus you can always layer.

You will not get nearly as many gifts for DC2. Save everything, buy extras that you love, but you should be covered on the basics.

I did wind up keeping a lot of stuff, the only thing i really have to buy are onesies and a few more 0-3 month outfits (some of DS have yellow stains from formula)

I have to admit it was bittersweet going through all DS1 clothes, he is getting so big, but still a baby and now another baby is coming into our family. Oh these pregnancy hormones.....

Same here!

Hand me downs are the best - especially at that age - they grow so fast and spit up so much!

same for me. I kept it all but I buy my younger dd a lot of new stuff too, I buy them matching stuff. I don't want her to feel shorted but it definitely helps to have a lot of used clothes around.

Ditto. Both my girls are spring babies and it has worked out great! I do have to pack things up for a bit each season (they are 2 years apart). I LOVE seeing DD2 in the same clothes DD1 wore. Chat Icon
