BTDT breastfeeding moms!
I had my son June 5th and have been exclusively breastfeeding since. Everything has been going great until the last couple of days - my nipples are SO sore! Especially when my LO first latches. I have been trying to remember to use lanolin after ever feeding, but they still burn. How long does it last??

I remember those days! For me it lasted a few weeks and slowly got better. It is basically your nipples getting used to being used for milk. Lots of lanolin, no soap on them in the shower and time. Hang in there - it does get better. This was around the time I was ready to give up and switch to formula. I am so glad I stuck with it. The more you nurse, the better it gets. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

For me it lasted about just about 2 weeks. Lanolin definitely helped. Also Lansinoh soothing gel pads are great- especially refrigerated! Try to "air out" as much as possible. Go topless as often as is practical for you. The air will help them heal. I can definitely relate and feel your pain! But I promise it gets better! Congrats on your little one!

Yeah it lasted 2 weeks for me too. I would stay topless as much as possible, and when I was done feeding dd I would squeeze a little milk onto my nipples and let them air dry. Worked way better for me than the Lanosh. HTH! Keep up the great work!

Try a nipple shield. I had to use one pretty much from day 1 and it saved me. I ended up using one the entire 9 months that I nursed, Even though they are only supposed to be temporary... hey- whatever works!

Re: BTDT breastfeeding moms!
Use a tissue to dry up a little and then lanisoh after. I kept the tissues and lanisoh right next to my rocker so I could do it one handed right after nursing. Good luck.

Nipple shields can be great, but I'd save it for if you're cracked/bleeding/blistering or some other serious issue. They can affect supply.

They can also effect supply and the babies latch. So I wouldn't mess around with then unless you have to. It makes it much easier for the baby, so when you want to go back to no shield it can be a problem.

Also try changing positions - it could be a subtle change in the latch that's causing pain. I had a weird thing with my DS - only one nipple was sore all the time. I found that if I nursed him in the football hold on that nipple - it was fine because it shifted his latch. Hope that helps! I remember thinking I would never be able to go back to work because I couldn't wear a shirt it was so sore - it sucked! Good luck!

Re: BTDT breastfeeding moms!
I think it lasted a month or less for me. It does get 100% better though! I remember it hurt so bad I'd be biting my lip not to scream in pain at times but once we got over that hurdle it was fine. I got to a point where it didn't hurt at all, try to hang in there. I also don't think the nipple shield is a good idea unless you have specific issues that call for them (which it doesn't sound you do!).

Def normal and def will pass..
Best tip/advice I got ..and NOT until my 3rd bf child :
Get saline spray and saturate gauze pads put that in a nursing pad and in your bra between feedings...DON'T let them get dry...I swear I felt relief in one application...I did this for a week and this worked better than ANY advice, crea,m, trick out there!

Re: BTDT breastfeeding moms!
With my DS it lasted about a week, went away for a few weeks, and then came back. When it came back I realized he was getting lazy with his latch. Once I corrected him we were back to going strong.
With my twins it took a little longer. Their mouths were so tiny and my boobs/nips are so big they were having a hard time getting it all in their mouth. After about 4 weeks we were back on track.
Best piece of advice I can give you is make sure the latch is correct. One bad latch can give you massively sore boobs!

Re: BTDT breastfeeding moms!
My nips were on fire until about 3-4 weeks! It's roughy but it goes away! Use the lanolin but I also recommend Earth Mama natural Nipple Butter. It goes on easier & smoother than lanolin (it's not as thick) & I don't know if it was coincidence or not, but when I started using it is when my nips felt a whole lot better! hang in there!!!
