BTDT Birthing Position

I'm curious how many women have chosen to birth in a position OTHER than the oh so typical lying down with knees to chest? It just seems so unnatural to me, and I've done a bit of research about other positions. I'm just curious how you went about making this plan with your doctors.

Re: BTDT Birthing Position

I really wasn't lying down when I was pushing. I mean, I wasn't lying flat on my back or anything.
The bed was definitely elevated.
In fact, I sat fully up in the bed the whole time I was in labor, to help the baby come down.

I delivered DS at LIJ; I don't think it was an option to get into any other position. And when it was time to push I wasn't even thinking about it.

ETA: I wasn't really laying flat; I was def in the upright position everyone mentioned. I assumed you meant another position like squatting etc.

BTDT Birthing Position

I was not lying down, I was more or less sitting. When I would push, I would pull my legs towards my chest. I labored quickly and pushed for less than an hour so if we were to have another kid, I wouldn't change anything.

I just have done a decent amount of research and the whole typical positioning just seems so strange to me, totally counter intuitive. I just want to have gravity helping me a decent amount, lol. What you described sounds better to me.

Yes this is what i did. As soon a I got my epi the nurse sat the bed straight up- almost like a chair. She said that way gravity can help with the baby descending.
I stayed like that the whole time.
When it came time to push I may have reclined slightly but I was definitely still sitting more upright then laying down. I think that's pretty standard.

every birthing video I see has the woman almost entirely lying down, maybe with her neck supported slightly, and she's pushing like that, with her knees up and back. It just does NOT seem like the best positioning... Good to know about the bed moving to a more seated position.

I have never heard of people actual lying flat. I was sitting and at one point they tried it on my side.

This. I was pretty much sitting upright in bed and my legs were tucked in towards my chest to push. DD was out in 47 minutes. Oh, and I watched 2 episodes of Roseanne throughout active labor Chat Icon

BTDT Birthing Position

I was in a very upright position. My DH was holding my left leg up and a nurse was holding my other leg.

BTDT Birthing Position

My labor was pretty short, only about 2:45 from start to finish and most of that time, I was at home, standing in various rooms in my house, trying to figure out how the hell I was going to get to the hospital.

When I walked into L&D, I said "I have to push now." They helped me onto a bed of some sort that was still propped up, so I definitely wasn't flat. DD was out 3 pushes later.

Same here. Not a complete 90 degree angle but probably more like 75.

ETA: I pushed for about 30-45 mins.

BTDT Birthing Position

I pushed for over 3 hours before ultimately needing a csection. We tried a variety of positions including almost fully standing at one point to try to get DS down. The only one that felt even remotely comfortable for me was sitting upright in bed like the PPs have mentioned.

I started pushing standing up next to the bed. Did most of the pushing on all fours and then delivered on my side.

I had the same experience when I delivered at Lij

With dc#1 I was in a reclined postion and they had me bring my knees into my chest each push

With #2 I was reclined but the bed was very elevated and I used the stirrups instead of pulling my knees in. This was WAY more comfortable!

BTDT Birthing Position

I labored/pushed for a long time and was able to labor in different positions- the nurses were helpful in guiding me.
