BTDT - Need labor help..UPDATED

I am 37w5d. Lost my mucus plug at 3am last night. Up all night and morning with diahrrea. Was nauesous and dry heaving all morning. Slightly crampy throughout the day. Around 3pm I became UNBEARABLY CRAMPY but its constant. I am in constant, constant serious pain in my lower abdomen and lower back and my breathing is labored. My water has not broken. i don't think I'm "contracting" though. I couldn't hold out any longer and called my doctor 30 min ago and they said to go to L&D. That's what I'm doing, but I feel like I'll end up being sent home because I have no clue what the real thing is like. Any words of wisdom? I'm struggling here.

UPDATE: I went to L&D like I was told and had a pretty horrific experience. I'm delivering at Winthrop. They hooked me up to monitor my contractions and sent in a resident to do a pelvic exam on me. She could barely use the speculum and and she could not find my cervix. She used the speculum, then took it out and shoved her hand inside me and couldn't find my cervix for several minutes. I was wincing and groaning in pain. She was younger than I am and kept saying "sorry dear". When she finally did find my cervix she was pressing as hard as she could and trying to shove as many fingers as she could inside. I couldn't bear it and was screaming. She then took her hand out and went back in with the speculum a second time. Once again, hurting me and I was squirming and yelling and eventually also crying. My DH jumped out of his chair to hold me. Then she tried reclining me all the way back and going back in with her hand. My DH was starting to freak out and she started saying "this is just a bloody show, it's normal." After she was all done there was blood on the ground and everywhere, all for her to conclude that I am 2cm dilated and 90% effaced. I'm also contracting a lot, but irregularly. She left to call my doctor and while she was gone I bled all over two gauze pads. She told me my doctor said to send me home and tell me to come into the office tomorrow or to go back to L&D if the contractions become regular in the night. So now I'm home. Still bleeding and petrified to ever go back to that hospital and have another resident touch me.

Re: BTDT - Need labor help..

labor shouldn't feel like constant pain, it comes and goes with at least a somewhat clear end and beginning to a contraction. If you have been in constant pain for hours I would consider getting checked out- maybe that your LO is just getting into position! GL!

OMG... That's awful! Ask for a fellow or a attending next time you go and if the nurses tell you one is not available tell them to page Dr. Sircuranza who is the head of Obstetrics.

So sorry you had that experience!

I didn't know Winthrop was a teaching hospital until this past week, I asked my OB which hospital he preferred North Shore Plainview or Winthrop to do a C-Section and he said if I go to Winthrop, a resident will be doing the C-section, I vetoed it right then and there!

When you go back, if a resident comes in ask what year they are. My sister is a 4th year OB/GYN resident and knows A LOT more then a 1st year. If they seem to not know what they are doing tell them to stop and tell them you want to see someone else. You are the patient. If they aren't listening to you ask to see the patient rep for the hospital. The rep will help convey what you need and want from the staff.

I was in and out of the ER months ago and HATED almost every doctor that saw me. It wasn't until I got a 4th year resident who actually listened to me and did a thorough check on me that probably saved my baby's life.

Good luck and I hope your next experience is better then your last.

I remember my ob telling me I could ask who the most senior person on staff is, request that person, and they wouldn't deny me. This had to do with the epi because my case is complex. When the time came I asked the dr if he was the most senior dr and he wasn't. I requested the most senior and they complied.

Very sorry for your experience :(
