Brown Rice?

Any suggestions on Brand?
Is it the same measurement and cooking time as white rice, 2:1 water to rice? Seasoning?

TIA!

Re: Brown Rice?

I usually just get whatever is on sale. And yes, it's still 2:1 water to rice. I have found that it takes longer to cook, some brands say 45 min. I usually just put a little salt and a pat of butter in the water before I put the rice in. Depending on what you're serving it with, you can pretty much season it with whatever you like.

Re: Brown Rice?

I buy brown basmati rice. It takes almost an hour to cook (much longer than white rice).

ETA: I put a small amount of boulion (sp?) in it while it cook.

Re: Brown Rice?

I always buy frozen brown rice from trader joes. You microwave it for three minutes and it is done. LOL. I love it!

I do buy regular brown rice at times when I run out of Traders and I make it like I would make white rice but Love the traders organic frozen brown rice!

We just had this tonight! I find it's good to have on hand but I like cooked rice better.

I usually buy natures promise fromstop and shop.

It does take a LONG time to cook, about 45 minutes, and I add a bit more water than the package says. I add a pat of butter when I'm about to eat it.

It is soooo healthy for you!

I buy the same kind but it never takes an hour to cook. It takes the same amount of time as white rice...

Re: Brown Rice?

Thanks for the responses and suggestions. I decided to go for it and make it last night. I got the Nature's Promise and it came out awful, it's not supposed to be crunchy right? I cooked it for about 50 mins and it was still raw, not good.

No it's not supposed to be crunchy. Are you sure you had enough water??

Yeah, you probably needed more water.

I add a bit more and when it's simmering, I check it. If it needs more water, I add it. Taste it ever once in a while.

You also might have had the temperature too high so the water evaporated before the rice absorbed it.

I can't cook rice, I bought a rice cooker and love it!

Me too! I am horrible at cooking rice, white or brown. It never ever comes out right. Those bags are the only reason we're able to have brown rice a few times a week.
