Breastfeeding question

DS is 8 weeks old. I am still feeding him for 20 minutes per side at each feeding. Sometimes he pulls off at 20 minutes, sometimes I have to take him off to switch sides. BTDT moms tell me it will eventually only take about 20 minutes total to feed. I feel like it takes so long to feed him!
How long did it take you to shorten the bf time. It is frustrating because I have to time all outings so I don't get stuck out where I will have to feed him for 40 - 60 minutes.
TIA for your help!

Re: Breastfeeding question

I had to see an LC and she told me never to end the feeding, no matter how long it takes. The baby will stop when he's ready. Sometimes they're not really feeding, but just bonding with you.

It is frustrating and inconvenient as far as scheduling goes, but it's what's best for the baby. I'm sure there are other professionals (LCs, pediatricians, OBs, etc) that will tell you that you can feed them as much or as little as you want. It's really a personal decision. You could always pump and bring some in a bottle with you.

Re: Breastfeeding question

Soon the baby will take less time to feed. I agree with the previous post, do not remove your child if he/she is still eating. But soon you will be able to tell if the baby is actually eating or just hanging out there (which is very comforting to them). At 3 months, I know when DD is done eating & is just nuzzling so I know when to take her off. It can be frustrating when you're trying to go out, I know. But just remember how wonderful it is for the baby to get your breastmilk AND to bond with you.

Re: Breastfeeding question

I'm definitly not complaining (although after reding what I wrote it certainly sounds that way!) I love the bonding that BF alows me with Jeremy. I was really just wondering when it would take less time. I realize every baby is different but just looking for an average Chat Icon

Re: Breastfeeding question

It just takes time. They learn how to BF more efficiently. DD now never breastfeeds for more than 20 minutes. She is 6 1/2 months.

Re: Breastfeeding question

My son is 5 months and i gave up timing him months ago. Now I just go with the flow and i'm much happier. The nursing time still varies from 5 minutes to even 45 minutes. Some of the nursing is just for comfort too. If you have things to do, maybe you should pump the milk into bottles and feed him that way when you need to.
