Breastfeeding/Pumping moms - help
Okay, so this is my second attempt at breastfeeding. My daughter never took to it and I did not push it since I had to go back to work and knew we would be starting formula then.
This time around I would like to give it a go and I have some questions. They may be stupid but I am at a loss.
I pump because my son won't latch. Sometimes I get 2oz, sometimes I get 4oz. Everything I read says do not mix breastmilk from one pumping session with another. My question is why and have any of you mixed it? 2oz is not enough for one feeding so I sort of have to mix it with more breastmilk.
Second question concerns gas. I feel like my ds is gassier when he takes breastmilk than he is with formula. What am I doing wrong? If I feel gassy does that mean that my milk will make him gassy? Are there certain foods that I should stay away from or does it depend on the child? I hate that he is in pain and if I can prevent it I would like to. I feel silly asking these questions especially since this is my second child but I need the help.
Thanks!

If you are eating anything gassy then your DS will be gassy also. I have mixed milk before but I try not to. I dont think it will really hurt to do that. One thing you should not do is mix freshly expressed milk with cold milk.

Agree with everything said here. Anything that you eat that can make you gassy could definitely make your baby gassy too. I stay away from broccoli, beans, etc...and a lot of people stay away from dairy too, although I don't and thankfully DD hasn't had a problem.
I've NEVER read that about not mixing milks. As above poster said, don't mix warm milk with cold milk, you can put your freshly expressed milk in the fridge to let it get cold, then mix it with milk that's already in the fridge. But I haven't heard you can't mix milks from different sessions-- I've done it, and DD has been fine.

As far as mixing milk I have done it and I think it is fine. However make sure the milk is at the same temperature before mixing. I put the new milk in the refrigerator and then a few hours later combine it with another bottle that was already in there.
Also Im not sure how quickly you are using the milk but you dont want to mix fresh milk with milk that had been in the refrigerator for like 5-6 days and is nearing the expired time frame. It is better to mix milk that has been expressed within the past few days and be sure to use it based on the soonest expiration day of the oldest milk, does that make sense?
As far as being gassy you really have to see what specific foods you are eating that could be affecting him by trial and error. I believe that broccoli and cauliflower are known gassy foods, some babies could also be sensitive to tomato sauce, and spices.
Good Luck!!

Dairy you consume can contribute to gassiness in breastfed babies- try laying off dairy for a week and see what happens.
I absolutely LOVE this website- I've found it SO incredibly helpful when I had questions about breastfeeding.

OMG I mix my milk all the time! I have heard of not to mix formula with BM but not expressed BM alone. I've been doing this for almost 2 1/2 months and my DS is fine. As far as the gassiness goes, unfortunately you have to stick to bland foods and avoid anything that would make you gassy.

FYI_ you can absolutely mix formula and BM- it's recommended to do that when/if you transition from BM to formula.

Re: Breastfeeding/Pumping moms - help
Thanks everyone. I had a feeling that mixing the breastmilk was fine but needed to hear it from other moms.
I am not sure what if anything in particular makes me gassy. I will just have to play it by ear I guess.
