Breastfeeding Moms Need Help- DD crying when eating

Today my 12 week old DD has barely breastfed from me. She has been starving, but every time I put her on to eat, she was suck for a minute and then pull off screaming and crying. I don't know what the problem is, something bothering her in her mouth, or my milk supply is decreasing and she is getting frustrated?

I gave her a bottle of pumped milk, and she took that just fine with no crying!

Anyone have this refusal happen to them? I hope she eats because I don't have enough time to pump what she needs for every feeding.

I'm having the same problem as well. It's so frustrating for both of us!!Chat Icon

I've been seeing a lactation consultant and whenever we go, DS (who is only almost 3 weeks old) will latch on though I couldn't get him on at home much. So she sees him latch and thinks we're doing well, but like tonight, he gets on and sucks REALLY hard. Then after a few minutes, he starts pulling away (while NOT letting go making me feel like he wants to rip the nipple off!Chat Icon ) And the he just starts SCREAMING and crying and I cant calm him down. When I give him a bottle of expressed milk - he's fine. I dont know what the problem is or what to do.Chat Icon

Sorry, that doesn't help you - but if anyone else has any ideas, I'd love to hear them as well.

I think it may have to do with your supply. My dd did that today for the first time and I gave her a bottle b/c I could tell she was really hungry but just wouldnt eat from me which is weird bc she is 4 month and always does. I think its b/c she was too hungry/tired to suck and I wasnt making enough milk. I hope its just a one time thing I'm going to start eating oatmeal again and drinking the mother milk tea, figure it cant hurt...

When this happened, DS usually had gas. It took me a while to realize that some of my food choices affected him. It could also just be a hunger strike. My advice is to try burping more often. It that doesn't work, just keep feeding. If it is a hunger strike, it will pass. Chat Icon

Just what I was going to say. When DS gets fussy on the breast, it usually means he needs to get a burp out.

When DD does come off, is there milk in her mouth, on lips or your nipple? Can you tell if she even gets you to let down? Maybe you can hand express to get some drops in DD's mouth to get things going. Massage your breast while she's sucking to keep it flowing. And also, try to change your holding position... better pillow, football hold, lying on your side, more private location, etc.

I do not have much experience in your situation but just can say, keep trying. You'll both figure it out as a team. Chat Icon

I was going to say this also b/c it happens a lot w/ dd but she said she took a bottle fine which makes me think it might not be gas..
