Reading through everything about breastfeeding and talking to BTDT moms, all I keep hearing about is how you get really bad cramps while feeding. Is this true? Does it only happen in the beginning or do you still have this months after starting?

What kind of cramps? I BF my DD for 7 mo and now BF my DS, he is 6 weeks, haven't had any cramps. Do you mean the feeling you get during letdown? That's nothing, it's just a very mild tingly feeling you get, not really pain or cramps.
Or do you mean your uterus contracting while when you BF first week or two ,I never had that, never felt any cramping or anything.

It only lasted the first few weeks for me and they weren't too bad at all. It"s actually a good sign that the baby's feeding well!

Meaning your uterus contracting. My mom said while feeding she would get a tighting sensation in her stomach from it. I was just curious if it ever goes away.

Your nipples might hurt a little (or a lot, depending how your baby latches on) in the beginning and they might get sore for a few days, but that goes away as long as the baby latches on correctly.

Yes, BF actually aids in the contraction of your uterus to return it to normal. Be warned....with #2 it can be even more intense. Thankfully the post-partum nurses warned me, or I would have thought I was dying.

It is only in the beginning.

oh no, don't worry about that, most women don't feel the cramping and if they do it's very mild , goes away in a few days.

i had some bad contracting while BFing/pumpin for the first few weeks. it wasn't exactly painful, it just felt almost like squeezing. a few times it was so uncomfortable i had to change positions. but it does go away fairly quickly and you forget all about it!

Re: Breastfeeding and Cramps

I used to get some cramping while nursing DD, but that happens no matter what you feed them. The uterus has to contract back to it's pre-baby size. They stopped after a week or two.

Same here. And I didn't have this with my second pregnancy. I was preparing myself got it and I didn't get the cramps this time. I did find that guzzling water while feeding/pumping helped a lot!!

Re: Breastfeeding and Cramps

I had it with DD #1 and by the time we left the hospital it was gone. I figured from what I had heard that with DD#2 it would be more intense, but with her I didn't have the cramping at all!

Lasted a few days - just a quick cramp when first latching and lasted about 30 sec.
