Breastfeeding a sleepy newborn
I am breastfeeding and the baby is just so sleepy and its really hard to get her up to nurse. It seems she only wants to wake up every 4hrs or so. Anyone have any advice??

If she seems fine I wouldn't worry too much. Is she wetting her diapers? Has she gained any weight? They sleep so much in the beginning. I used to rub my DC's cheek and they would nurse while sleeping.

I have the same issue as well.I was told to tickle the baby's feet, hold her under her arms and have her feet touch yourlap (or boppy), wipe her face with a cool cloth. None of them work forme, but it may work for you.

Yeah none of those things work for me either! She is only 4 days old so I am hoping it will get better as she gets a litte bigger. Its really upseting though!

Im going through the same thing. I usually tickle her feet, open up her nighty, blow on her, bounce her up and down. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. This is what newborns do. As long as she has 5 wet diapers per day and abut 3 poopy diapers she is fine. The baby will take what she needs and if she is hungry trust me she will wake up.

Good grief only 3 poopy diapers? good lord I must be overfeeding Abby as she never made it to the diaper two days ago - the lil miss went right in my hand

Please, I had my baby Dec 06...if you search, you will see how distraught I was that my kid always slept and never ate.

the same baby was a BFing addict for the next 18 months who NEVER sleeps!
just keep offering...everything is so new...they are wiped out from the journey they just took.
Mine was born 9.7.
Brought home from hospital 8.8 w/ slight jaudice. I made myself CRAZY with the eating.
Within 2 weeks, he was a nursing monster.

my dd slept all day and was up all night- the dr said to try and wake her during the day to eat if we could, but not during the night- just to get her days and nights on the right track- so every 3 hours we would try to make sure she ate...the only thing that would get her to wake was a cold wash cloth to her feet... once she was feeding and she would fall asleep, i would tickle her ear or her feet to get her to start sucking again... now the little miss NEVER sleeps through a meal

Baby Josh is doing great! We are up 2 oz from when we left the hospital. Pumping helps, with the bottle, I am able to sort of force feed him in his sleep. There is no waking this guy. He went for a jaundice test yesterday, stuck 3 times with needle, did not even flinch. At night he is up every 2 hours, it is so great to hang out with him, that we don't mind being up...we look at him sleeping all day and get bored out of our minds.
My engorgement is going away slowly. Thanks for all the helpful fms.
