Breast Feeding while pregnant? Supply going down?
Hi ladies, well- I'm still in shock since I found out I'm a little over 8 weeks pregnant with DC2. Totally unplanned & surprised. I'm still BFing my DS, who is almost 10 months old. I had planned on going to 1 year and then switching to whole milk. BUT, since I became pregnant, I feel like my supply is really low. I called his pediatrician & she said to maybe supplement with formula for the last 2 months. But, I'd rather just wing it until he can go to whole milk.
My question is- How will I know if he's not getting enough from me? He still has really wet diapers, but we noticed he IS waking up in the middle of the night now like 3x! He never did that!!! Also, would you switch to formula this late in the game or just try to hold out 2 more months? Thanks!!!

Re: Breast Feeding while pregnant? Supply going down?
i started to ween my first dd off the bm at 11 months. I pumped and bf her so i would start with one week giving him a bottle of milk for one feeding the second week two bottles then the last feedings you will drop will probably be the morning and nighttime. good luck and congrats!

Re: Breast Feeding while pregnant? Supply going down?
I got pregnant at 4.5 mths pp. I was able to EBF until 7 mths, and then supplemented a little until 9 mths, and i was almost completely dry by then. I think you will be able tell if it isn't enough. Your DC will always be trying and just not seem full, and you won't have any left. At 9 mths my DD would go to nurse and before she latched, I would squeeze to see how much i had, and it would be like nothing.

I don't really have experience with this, but I do know that kellymom.com has a whole section on pregnancy/tandem breastfeeding. Maybe they have some good ideas? hope that helps

I would start transitioning to whole milk now. My ped said 10.5 months was OK.

I got pg at 6 months pp... and stopped bf'ing completely by 8.5 months. My supply dropped and my doctor suggested I start weaning anyway...

Drink lots and lots of extra water...I found out I wad preg at 6 months...I def does lessen but with extra pump sessions I was able to keep it up (barely) until 11-11.5 mo..then just went to whole milk...my dr said it wasn't worth it to switch to formula so late in the game...good luck!

You can also try a calcium/magnesium/zinc supplement. It got my supply back up with AF came, I wasn't getting enough in my diet. I would clear it with your ob first though if you try it.

Start transitioning to WM while BF, I do not see any reason at all to go to formula if he is eating table food well. Once your supply fizzles, then he should be happy on just WM. Nina went from BM to WM at around the same time.

Re: Breast Feeding while pregnant? Supply going down?
I would drink more water and maybe try eating oatmeal - both always made my supply increase. I bfed DD#1 until I was about 5 mos pregnant with DD#2. My older dd was 11.5 mos when I pretty much dried up. I started transitioning to whole milk at 11 mos and used my frozen supply for a while - it lasted until she was 13.5 mos. Do you have a good frozen supply?
