bottles
i'm hoping to nurse but will need to pump since i'll be returning to work. at what age do babies start drinking the 8oz bottles? i'm CLUELESS to the nursing/pumping system.

I am currently breastfeeding and pumping my 6 week old and we use 4 oz bottles now...I researched how much breastfed babies eat and it seems like they continue to eat about 4 oz per feeding until about 6 months (I think the composition of the milk changes so they don't need more)...we are using the Playtex nursers with the drop-in liners and love them, by the way!

well, I plan to nurse too, and originally I planned to get all 9oz avent bottles (because obviously you can feed 4oz's out of those too!) but I like the 4oz bottles so I added some of those on there as well. In total, I registered for about 10 4oz bottles and 15 9oz bottles.
I also registered for 3 different avent nipples, newborn, medium flow and fast flow.
I also registered for a conversion kit ... so that my avent bottles will allow me to pump into them directly from most breast pumps (i registered for a medela pump but not the medela bottles b/c I didn't like the look of them!) Also, for some addtl info: I'm going to rent a breast pump from the hospital for the first month and if BFing doesn't work out I can return my medela unused.

I honestly only have 2 bottles and 6 nipples right now (but it does have the drop-in liners so they are easier to clean) and really don't need more right now...I only bottlefeed once per day usually, twice if we are out somewhere that I don't want to breastfeed...if you plan on bottle feeding often, I would say buy more because cleaning the bottles can be a pain...

thats a good idea - i didn't know we could rent breast pumps? does the hospital offer this to you or do we need to ask them? thank you!
I heard Dr. Brown's bottles are good too. jeesh i didn't even realize we need different nipples... where do i learn about this stuff?

Dr. Browns are great but more for colicky babies. They have alot of pieces so I say if you don't need them, don't get them. Avent are great but you need different nipples as the baby gets bigger and their sucking reflex gets better. They will require a faster flow, hence the different nipples.

about the breast pump...you have to ask the hospital...or ask around (I haven't even asked mine yet)...
I only knew about the nips b/c my sister just had her baby...i was clueless too!
