Bottle question

Stupid question but when did you switch to level 2 nipples on bottles? My DS is 10 weeks old but is falling asleep during feedings no matter what I do and wakes up 15 minutes later screaming because he's hungry. He's a big boy, averages about 6 oz and not very gassy so I'm wondering if it's time. Pediatrician said to try it but I'm a little nervous.

Bottle question

It's typically every 3 months. So at 3 months.

But there really is no need for it. Someone once said a nursing mom doesn't switch her nipple lol.

We never went to level 2 - when we tried, the flow speed was too quick for my DS (both of them) so we stayed at level 1.

Re: Bottle question

We switched to level 2 around 3 months old. There's no reason to be nervous to try it. Worse case it's too fast, he will just dribble the formula out of his mouth and you can switch back. It makes feeding faster, so there are benefits!

With my first DD, we never switched. She stayed on the slow level. Switched DD2 at around 4 months to medium and she stayed there. No harm in trying- you'll know if it's too fast and you just switch back.

Re: Bottle question

My son is 4 months old and I'm still using level 1 nipples. He seems fine eating so I don't really see a reason to change them until we start adding cereal to his bottles.

I remember switching to level 2 because DD was sucking so hard on the level 1 that she was collapsing the nipple. The level 2 was a little fast for her at first but she got used to it.

Re: Bottle question

What is he doing right before the bottle? If he's up/cranky, he may be too tired to,work through the bottle. I like to train my kids to be on an eat-activity-sleep cycle so they don't fall asleep during feeding, and so they don't become dependent on the bottle to fall asleep.

You can try changing his diaper midway through the bottle to wake him up more naturally.

Re: Bottle question

Around 4 months but I don't think it made much of a difference. We still use #1 nipples and she's almost 10 mo now.

ETA- maybe try and strip him down to a onesie so he's not super cozy and want to just eat until he passes out. That way it will keep him just a little cold so he won't fall asleep.

Re: Bottle question

DD had reflux so when I tried to change to a faster flow nipple she would drink too fast and volcano vomit.
I went back to slow flow and never changed the whole time she was on bottles

Re: Bottle question

Thank you ladies! DS loves being naked, so it doesn't help in keeping him awake lol! He's just really tough to keep awake I guess. I'll stick to the 1's for now and maybe try it at 3 months. If the worst thing in the world is him falling asleep I'll take it rather than worrying about puking and gagging. I appreciate the advice. Chat Icon
