Bottle first or solids?

We're trying oatmeal today for DD's first feeding with solids. She's 6 months old. Am I supposed to give her the oatmeal first and then the bottle or bottle first then oatmeal? Chat Icon

Our ped said to give oatmeal first, so she'll have an appetite for it. If you give the bottle first she won't be hungry at all and will be less likely to try the food. And you give so little oatmeal, it won't ruin her appetite for the bottle afterwards.

Have fun with the oatmeal! Have your camera ready! Chat Icon

Re: Bottle first or solids?

ALWAYS the bottle first. That is where they get the majority of their nutrition from and it's far more important that they get all their bottles in at that age then solids. To me, solids were just a bonus for DD. I always gave her the bottle first followed by solids about a half hour later. If she didn't finish all of her cereal, fruit, etc. I didn't care because she got her bottle in.

ETA - My ped wanted the bottles first, not solids. Like I said, they don't care how much of the solids they are eating but they do care how many ounces they are drinking.

Bottle first or solids?

My ped said to do the solid feedings in between bottles. So if I give him a bottle at 8 and 12, I give the cereal at 10. Its amazing how everyone has different techniques on this! Thats a big part of the reason why I never know if I am feeding him correctly! Chat Icon

Bottle first or solids?

I usually gave solids in between bottles, about an hour before the next one. I can see both sides of the before/after, but honestly if you are just starting solids, they will be eating such a small amount it shouldn't mess up their bottle intake if you do it before. Solids at a young age is practice at that point.

It's all a matter of opinion really, and whatever works best for you. As long as they are drinking enough formula or breastmilk the timing of the solids isnt that important when they are younger. Eating is for practice at that point. As they get older and their diets switches from formula/bm to majority solids you will fall into a groove.

Re: Bottle first or solids?

i always did in between so it didnt mess with the milk...it shouldn't interfere or replace a bottle feeding...that is the main source of nutrition..it is really just practice and not needed early on!

Ditto! The bottle at that age is much more important than the cereal.

Silly question then. I Know you mix the cereal with formula. I assumed I'd warm the bottle and use that for the cereal. So do I just get the formula from the RTF bottle and then warm up the cereal? The formula is only good for an hour Chat Icon

I agree. We tried both ways but if we gave cereal first she was too hungry and wouldnt eat it. If we gave bottle first she didnt want the cereal. Even at 10 1/2 months we still do bottles and meals separate. 3 bottles a day and 3 meals a day. It took us a trying different ways until we found what worked best for us.

I used powder formula. I would put a little powder for the similar flavor and add water to make it the.consistency he liked at the time. If you're using RTF then I would just pour directly into the cereal to make the right consistency. Personally I probably wouldn't warm it up much, just a bit to get the chill off.

DD never needed her cereal warm. It's not like you or I eating Quaker oatmeal; the baby oatmeal is already cooked. If you're using RTF it will be room temperature, right? Just pour that into the cereal.

The first time you give it, you'll use like 2 oz. formula and 1 or 2 TBSP of cereal, if I remember correctly. So it'll basically just be formula (which is why you can give it any time and not hurt his formula intake at all). It's practically liquid at first, and as he gets used to the spoon being in his mouth, you add more and more cereal so it gets thicker (this took my DD a week or two, some babies take months to get used to it).

Re: Bottle first or solids?

I always gave solids 30-60 minutes after a bottle/BFing. Solids are just for practice at this age. It's more important that they get their nutrition from BM/formula.
